The tutor's objective is not simply to relay information to a student in a bland or dry manner, but rather to establish a solid foundation and understanding for the students - to devise a teaching method that works best. The objective is for the student to learn in the most efficient and enjoyable manner. I am a University lecturer and a senior…

The goal of tutoring should be to empower students and thus the primary focus of tuition should be to develop confidence and independence rather than reliance. For this reason, I believe the most important component of tutoring is not working through content, but reflecting and future planning to ensure the student believes they have the skills…

It is important that the tutor understands the needs and the gaps that the student has at the beginning of the sessions. An understanding of the needs of the student ensures that key objectives and targets are set with the student to drive ownership. In my opinion, a tutor must be able to empathize with the student and create a safe space for them. Its important to be constructive and patient especially with the ones that take time to grasp topics. One must keep instructions clear and always strive to empower the child by focusing on their strengths. Engage them instead of lecturing…

The most important things a tutor can do could be split into two parts. Academically, tutors are there to help the student to learn all the knowledge required for them to achieve better grades. Spiritually, tutors are there as mentors, which they need to encourage the student to achieve their full potential, because usually due to exam pressure,…

A tutor will ideally be able to give a student confidence, knowledge, an understanding of why learning is important, and hopefully some sense of enjoyment of the learning process. Tutoring to me is so much more than simply teaching the subject matter to a student. I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to build the student's confidence and faith in him/herself. For me, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to motivate the student to study. In my opinion, students are the ones who make progress and I, as a tutor, am only a guide and a motivator. As for me, motivation is much more important than knowledge. Every student can find possibly any knowledge available by using Google, but…

Lidia is a great match for my daughter. She is gentle and encouraging and my daughter has responded well to her tutoring. She has gained confidence and her attitude towards maths has really improved.
Sarah Marshall, Thebarton

Inside ThebartonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Mia focused on **solving linear equations** and practiced graphing using the gradient-intercept form, including identifying x- and y-intercepts.

Year 10 student Jack worked through **exponential graphs by sketching various forms and translating them** (including reflections), as well as reviewing log rules for simplification.

For Year 11, Priya tackled surds—specifically **simplifying expressions with both single integers and more complex denominators**—and discussed challenges around dividing surds.

Recent Challenges

Several students showed process-related obstacles across both primary and senior years.

In Year 8, one student frequently arrived late to lessons ("was also 10mins late to the lesson"), which meant less time for support on algebra basics.

A Year 12 student's working for compound interest questions was hard to follow; setting out multi-step solutions in a clearer format would have made back-checking possible when errors appeared.

Another senior student avoided reviewing past mistakes during exponential graph revision, so misunderstandings from previous lessons lingered into new material.

Distraction and inconsistent homework completion in middle years left gaps that resurfaced during mixed problem-solving tasks.

Recent Achievements

One Thebarton tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who had previously struggled with long division of polynomials manage to work through the process independently by the end of the lesson, after some initial confusion.

Another high schooler, who was often hesitant to speak up when unsure, started identifying areas from class where she felt lost and actively asked for extra practice—then successfully solved those questions on her own.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student who used to rush through homework now takes time to back-check answers and explains her problem-solving steps aloud without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hindmarsh Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St George College - Junior Campus.
