As a tutor, your number one goal is to of course help the student understand the content they need help with. But as a tutor you also want to build a strong relationship with your student. I have strong communication skills, I've been playing team sports all my life. I'm also the kind of person who always takes initiative. If a student were to ask…

The most important things a tutor can do is to always be understanding and patient as some concepts are more challenging to grasp for students. Also being able to communicate in a manner that the student is able to understand and allows for them to progress. My strengths are my understanding nature, patience and my ability to adapt. I believe…

There are a few but I think the point of a tutor is for reinforcement. There is no way that a tutor will be able to pump out as much content as a student will be able to consume from traditional school, however with the 1 on 1 nature of tuition, tutors can take topics a lot further than a teacher would for an entire class. Not only this, a tutor…

Provide a stable and consistent source of support in their education, while simultaneously being a person they are under no pressure to impress. Since tutors have no influence over their lives outside of tutoring, students often feel comfortable asking us questions they would feel embarrassed or "dumb" for asking a parent or teacher. Tutors…

Being patient with the student and not making them feel unwelcome or stressed. I always try to have a calm composure so that my student gets the most out of my tutoring sessions and enjoys them. I believe that I am quite level headed and have a cool composure when tutoring my current student. If they don't understand something I take my time with…

Inside TheodoreTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jack focused on multiplication strategies and division algorithms, practicing efficient written methods for both.

In Year 8, Olivia worked through linear equations by solving for unknowns and also tackled simultaneous equations using substitution techniques.

For Year 10, Ethan concentrated on quadratic equations—solving them by factorising and applying the quadratic formula—with attention to when each method is most effective.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10, a student hadn't completed any extra exam revision between sessions—building independent study remains a hurdle. "Jay wasn't completely caught up on the recent classwork," noted one tutor, which led to gaps in session focus and meant time was spent re-covering old ground instead of advancing.

In Year 7 maths, messy written work and skipping working steps when solving equations made it hard to spot errors; as one tutor put it, "formatting of solutions and backchecking needs working on."

A Year 3 student's homework was often incomplete or incorrect but done correctly when supported in person—highlighting a need for more consistent independent practice at home.

Recent Achievements

One Theodore tutor noted that a Year 9 student, previously hesitant to speak up, now confidently asks questions when algebra steps don't make sense and even requests harder problems.

A high schooler preparing for exams took real initiative by writing out problem-solving steps on cards to review later—something she hadn't done before—which helped her tackle simultaneous equations more independently.

Meanwhile, in primary sessions, one student who used to struggle with angles can now consistently measure any angle with a protractor and explains her process aloud as she works through geometry problems.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Thanks for all your help with Griffin over the years. Its really made a difference to his grades.

We are very pleased with the tutoring and Nafuil is a very pleasant young man and easy to talk to. I was a bit concerned that Autumn might be a bit shy with him but she really likes him and all is well. Nafiul has advised that Autumn only has small gaps in her knowledge and he is assisting her with gaining this knowledge.

Cassandra has told me that her new tutor DJ has an excellent teaching style. He shows her every step of a maths problem and encourages questions. DJ also goes to the effort of making up personalised worksheets for her based on her maths book. Thank you, DJ, the effort is appreciated.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Erindale Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Theodore Primary School.
