I think the most important thing a student can do for a student is to personally assist and direct their teaching towards the specific needs of the student. I believe a tutor should also be very patient and understanding, and be persistent as there are so many different ways to teach and explain concepts. I believe a student should never leave a…

The first thing is to make students not feeling too resistant to math. You need to be interested in a subject in order to achieve a good result. Also, a tutor should make the student feel comfortable and relax, and be confident to do math questions and ask questions. My strength is to use the simplest way to explain math questions. I had always…

It's most important to be patient and listen thoroughly to ensure that the student receives the style of tutoring that helps them to thrive. An engaging and positive attitude from the tutor is also key in ensuring the student feels inspired and motivated. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them how to study and learn properly, as it then gives them the ability to use that skill outside of tutoring sessions and greatly improve their grades as well as their academic confidence. Another thing I believe to be important is making the learning experience as…

The most important thing is to gain a core understanding of the topic, and not just a surface level rote learning of how to solve problems. It's also important to have an understanding of each student and to recognise when to push them and when they've hit a wall (mentally). I think my greatest strength is my approachability and flexibility. I do…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the tools to be able to confidently work through academic problems on their own. In an English context this can mean teaching a student how to deconstruct what is required by a question, or giving them the skills to analyse a text for thematic and technical…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be there for the student. When a student may feel sad about a grade or a mark they received from a test, it is always important for the tutor to sit down with the student and talk to the student about what they could have done well in the test but also to acknowledge the things they also…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to have patience and be willing to share their own experience. Firstly, being patient is essential. A good tutor should learn not to show annoyance in their speech or body language as young people, especially children, can quickly grasp negative emotions. It might make them feel worried…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is allowing a student time to try and solve aspects of the problem themselves following proper guidance, instead of hand-holding them the entire way. This helps build critical thinking skills and allows the student to recognise the roots of the question. A tutor should also be understanding of any…

Beyond simply helping a student improve their grades, I believe a tutor should aim to further engage their students in their learning and to actively enjoy school. Important things: 1. To be well prepared for sessions; 2. To strive to develop a connection with the student. Such connection would enable the student to feel comfortable sharing his challenges; 3. Feel enthusiastic about the subject. Such enthusiasm can be contagious which would increase the student’s interest and make him more earnest in…

The most crucial thing in tutoring must be that the teacher should be impartial, when it comes to tutoring a group of students. The tutor must be able to understand each student's level and must be able to teach with patience. The tutor must make learning fun with practical examples and concept-wise learning methods. Moreover, teacher must be able…

Inside ThornburyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Daniel focused on solving worded problems by translating real-life scenarios into mathematical equations and practiced skills with quadratic equations, including factorising and sketching their graphs.

For Year 11, Lily worked through probability concepts such as sample spaces, conditional probability, and the addition and multiplication rules, using tables to clarify multi-stage experiments.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Max tackled calculus topics by reviewing differentiation from first principles as well as applying derivative rules to interpret the meaning of slopes and turning points in functions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student reviewing organic chemistry sometimes skimmed over questions without fully checking charge states, as a tutor noted: "Needs to remember states and to check over charge of molecules."

In Methods calculus (Year 12), another student showed confidence but occasionally struggled to set out full working for integration constants, leading to uncertainty about final answers.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner tackling multi-digit subtraction would often forget to carry the one, making it tricky to spot where errors crept in.

During practice, the urge to finish quickly meant small details—like careful reading or stepwise calculations—were missed, resulting in avoidable confusion mid-task.

Recent Achievements

A Thornbury tutoring session saw a Year 11 student tackle trigonometric relationships independently, where previously he'd often paused or waited for hints before attempting these questions.

Another high schooler who used to get stuck factoring polynomials was able to complete almost all quadratic equations without any help, showing real self-sufficiency during revision.

In the primary years, one student who would hesitate over times tables managed to recall and write out their 9s with only minor prompting—something that's been a challenge in earlier sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Northcote Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Mary's School.
