It is important to provide encouragement and positive reinforcement. A kind word can easily lift their spirits and encourage them to push through despite the obstacles and struggles. It is essential to assist the students in developing good study habits and boost their self-esteem. I believe that not all students learn at the same pace and some…

I major in Actuarial Studies at the University of Melbourne, and good at math (e.g. calculus, linear algebra). I can tutor math in English or tutor math in Mandarin, and can provide some assistance if you run into some Chinese-relevant problems. In addition, building up a good connection and relationship with a student based on the true…

One of the important things a tutor should do is to convey the concepts in the most simplified manner with examples and practical usage, as students are usually more motivated to study a topic when they know its importance in the practical world, which is not always easy to see in maths. The other crucial thing is that a tutor should be friendly…

I have the capabilities to interact with my students effectively and ensure that they have a conducive environment to learn and develop. This also entails the development of confidence…

It promotes learning and makes sure that every student feels valued. Tutors should also engage students in their learning and help them realise their full potential. A tutor should be able to help a student where ever they struggle. A tutor needs to have full knowledge of what the student requires, what they already know, and the best approach in guiding them. If there is no progress in their performance, then clearly the tutor might not be teaching or guiding them in the right way, in which case they should…

I reckon fully understanding the student and approaching in an empathetic manner to help the student. Being a tutor is more than just teaching students subjects, as a role-model for them. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is most definitely, helping them gain a confidence through teaching them and helping them understand the…

Firstly, try my best to help students solve their problems. Meanwhile we need to build the positive relationship with student, which means not only teaching them knowledge but also encouraging them on study. A tutor, i believe, “should†(rather than just “canâ€) keep the learner relaxed. They should ensure that the learner fully understands every concept in stages (what i like to call ‘staged implementation’). I also believe that a tutor should go through the basics thoroughly before jumping into potentially more complex…

Giving the student the tools and forming the basis to improve themselves is crucial. I think forming the student's understanding for answering any sort of question whether it be in English or Maths is necessary for achieving marks that most students cannot gain. While for maths a lot of the questions are based around simply using a formula,…

A tutor should give them the tools and the confidence to tackle any problem in the subject area. This means that the student should gain the skills to solve any problem in the subject area. As a tutor, we are teaching our students how to think, not what to think because we want them to be independent learners. Our roles are to guide students in setting up their learning goals, motivate them to learn, and enable them to self-assess. As results, students can improve their academic performance, confidence, motivation, creativity, and…

This may involve sharing personal stories or examples of how the subject matter has impacted their own lives or…

Inside ThornburyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Daniel focused on solving worded problems by translating real-life scenarios into mathematical equations and practiced skills with quadratic equations, including factorising and sketching their graphs.

For Year 11, Lily worked through probability concepts such as sample spaces, conditional probability, and the addition and multiplication rules, using tables to clarify multi-stage experiments.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Max tackled calculus topics by reviewing differentiation from first principles as well as applying derivative rules to interpret the meaning of slopes and turning points in functions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student reviewing organic chemistry sometimes skimmed over questions without fully checking charge states, as a tutor noted: "Needs to remember states and to check over charge of molecules."

In Methods calculus (Year 12), another student showed confidence but occasionally struggled to set out full working for integration constants, leading to uncertainty about final answers.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner tackling multi-digit subtraction would often forget to carry the one, making it tricky to spot where errors crept in.

During practice, the urge to finish quickly meant small details—like careful reading or stepwise calculations—were missed, resulting in avoidable confusion mid-task.

Recent Achievements

A Thornbury tutoring session saw a Year 11 student tackle trigonometric relationships independently, where previously he'd often paused or waited for hints before attempting these questions.

Another high schooler who used to get stuck factoring polynomials was able to complete almost all quadratic equations without any help, showing real self-sufficiency during revision.

In the primary years, one student who would hesitate over times tables managed to recall and write out their 9s with only minor prompting—something that's been a challenge in earlier sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Northcote Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Mary's School.
