I think the most important thing is making the student feel comfortable asking questions. A tutor should focus on understanding where the student is getting stuck and help them build confidence, not just give answers. I'm patient and I don't rush students. If something doesn't click the first time, I'm happy to explain it again in a different way.…

I think that a tutor should not limit themselves to just subject knowledge. They should research more on effective teaching methods and strategies that might help them connect to their students more. They should develop practices that make a student's life easier and should understand the individual needs of the students. Often tutors have to…

Being a tutor, the most important thing I can do is to be there for them. A tutor is not only some job that we do and get paid for but must go above and beyond to make a difference in their life. I have an engineering background and solid foundations, I love all things science but most of all, mathematics and…

At any point, I should be patient and follow their speed. If I tutor one person at a time, the biggest advantage would be being able to figure out in detail what they are struggling with. So, I can make small but definite improvements by giving them the different levels of questions, from the lowest they can do to the level they need to achieve.…

A good tutor needs to understand the student's needs and areas of weakness and work on them. A tutor can engage more in helping the student understand specific concepts and make the environment of teaching interesting. The teaching environment can be made interesting by giving the students a reason to learn the concepts and showing real-world…

Like I said, patience and comfortable environment created between the tutor and the student. Rest all can be taken care of by referring to the respective books and study materials. Interactive studies make students remember and understand topics really well. If a tutor can help the student to enjoy the subjects, then it becomes an activity which…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is create a safe, encouraging space where students feel confident to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. It’s not just about helping them understand the content, it’s also about building their self-belief and showing them that they "can" succeed. A good tutor should also adapt their…

I think listening to them to make sure their needs are known and understood by all parties involved. This helps create a supportive atmosphere that can hopefully allow the student to reach their potential. Making it a fun and rewarding experience for both parties is also important, as this can show a student how good the experience can be,…

The most important thing I believe a tutor can do for the students is to understand and listen to them and their needs. When a tutor listens and spends time building a relationship with his/her student, it allows the tutor to personalise the learning for the student by incorporating connections to the student's interests. In addition, it allows…

Always know what students need and what's their priority. This means a tutor need to show respect to students. They need to know very well about the students and are wise and knowledgable enough to give good advice and make sure students love listening to the advice. I love to solve questions. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to get a proper understanding of the level of mathematical 'maturity' of a specific student, rather than just assuming a certain background knowledge. Once this is established, it's possible to get the core of what exactly a student is struggling with (usually a particular fundamental concept) and…

As a tutor, it is very important that the teacher becomes an inspiration to the student. The passion with which the tutor teaches the student matters a lot and this also influences the students influence on the subject. When a tutor teaches the student with passion, the student is definitely going to like the subject and learn with full passion as…

For me, one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is interaction. As interactive the session will be, more output will one get from their students. Inside ThorngateTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ava practised skip counting and worked on structuring clear sentences for English.

In Year 9, Ethan focused on Pythagoras' Theorem and calculating the circumference of circles using step-by-step diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Grace revised indices and surds, strengthening her understanding of both simplifying expressions with powers and working through related textbook problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, one student relied heavily on a calculator for even basic arithmetic, slowing progress in algebra as noted: "Student needs to work on mental arithmetic as they rely on calculator too much."

During Year 11 Probability, another hesitated when textbook problems became more complex than standard practice drills—requiring additional explanation and after-lesson follow-up by email.

In Year 7, a reluctance to write working for division unless questions were laid out neatly led to confusion if the format changed. Each moment reflected a process block rather than lack of understanding; anxiety or formatting issues shaped how the task was tackled.

Recent Achievements

One Thorngate tutor noticed a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to tackle complex area questions now breaking down irregular shapes into rectangles and triangles on her own, using the right formulas without prompting.

In a senior session, a Year 12 student who used to get stuck on surds and powers started expanding brackets accurately after targeted practice, asking for extra examples instead of avoiding tough questions.

Meanwhile, in primary sessions, one younger student began reciting times tables aloud without relying on charts—she now asks for harder problems and completes them with growing speed each week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Adelaide City Libraries - Tynte Street—or at your child's school (with permission), like Blackfriars Priory School.
