A tutor should provide a safe space for the student, both academically and mentally. It is important that a maths tutor empathizes with the students and provide them vivid and interesting perspectives about the subjects which goes beyond school learning. Furthermore, it is needed that the tutor - student relationship be a team work, where the…

When the student is confident, any subject will seem easy to learn. I am a fluent English speaker and also have good leadership skills. Tutors must be able to empathise with the academic pressure experienced by a student, and thus adapt their teaching methods to best suit specific individuals by taking into consideration their observed strengths and weaknesses. It is critical to recognise the student\'s weak points during learning early to develop a routine that allows the student…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to allow the student to enjoy the process of learning the material. To me, if a tutor is able to create an environment that is enjoyable as well as make the learning process enjoyable it can help the student to improve a lot quicker as they are enjoying the process more. My strongest…

I feel that encouraging students and pushing them to their full potential is so important. Some of the time, students aren't aware of what they are capable of and what they can achieve in their learning and I feel that paying attention to their strengths and areas of improvement allows them to recognise their potential. I am very passionate about…

A tutor needs to genuinely want the students to learn out of every session and care for the students. The tutor needs to be 100% focused on every second of the session. I am very patient and able to adapt to student needs. I think I can assess character easily as well, hence I know how to set the pace in terms of teaching different…

I believe the most important things in which a maths tutor can do for a student is to not only pass on their knowledge but to act as a positive influence for them to like the subject more or take more interest in studying particular subjects (so that they enjoy learning). I believe that my strengths as a tutor are that I genuinely enjoy teaching…

The most important things are to teach them about the topic as simple as possible which allows them to answer questions. The tutor should invest some time to find out what the student is still struggling with and target that to ensure the student isn't losing any marks. The tutor should also find extra resources for the student to practice their…

I think the ability to believe in a student in the most important thing anyone can do for them. If you don't believe in them you can't expect them to believe in themselves which would make your job way harder than it should be. I am able to relate to the students as I am fresh out of high school, I know what they're going through all too well. I…

I believe that although marks are a great metric, they cannot be easily achieved without the tutor first building the student\'s confidence and self-motivation. Hence building the student these intrinsic qualities is key for a student to then provide the desired outcome. I believe that my strengths lie in my ability to connect to people on a…

Teach the student how to approach new content, instead of just teaching them the content that they need to learn at that moment (of course, doing this as well is also beneficial). The most important thing for a maths tutor to be able to do is listen and gauge the progress of the student. There is not any point in just explaining the content verbatim - the student is here because they could not just pick up the textbook and consume the content. From there the flexibility of the tutor's approach is vital to maximise the…

Teach a student how to learn, not just remember things. Inside ThornleighTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Tahlia focused on calculating percentage increase and decrease, including real-life applications like mark up, cost price, and discounts, completing extra questions from her test book for practice.

Year 9 student Malissa worked on simplifying algebraic expressions and revisited the topic of surface area with targeted review based on her recent test feedback.

Meanwhile, Year 4 student Hayes practiced division with remainders and applied BODMAS rules to fraction problems, before touching on area calculations for squares, rectangles, and circles.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for linear regression relied heavily on calculator methods without showing working, which made it harder to spot small errors or check understanding.

In a Year 8 English session, Ryan received feedback on his writing but did not act on it before the next lesson; as noted, he did not put the feedback into practice yet, so similar issues reappeared.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student sometimes mixed up units and tens columns in multiplication, leading to off-track answers. This meant time was spent correcting basics instead of advancing to new skills.

Recent Achievements

A Thornleigh tutor recently noticed a big shift in Tahlia, a high school student who used to hesitate when she got stuck—she's now actively asking questions and working through tricky algebra problems instead of giving up.

Another win came from Ashton, also in high school, who scored 93% on his term test after weeks of focused revision; he tackled log, trigonometry, and simultaneous equations confidently this time.

Meanwhile, Hayes in primary school showed real diligence by completing all his assigned maths problems before moving on to extra challenges during their session.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Dev is great and Thea's maths is really coming along.  She's more confident and much better.  She didn't have much to catch up on but still a little further to go I think.  We're very happy with Dev.  Thank you.

Justin has been such an asset to Connor, honestly, his confidence and understanding has improved with Justin's assistance. We are so greatful to yourselves and Justin for all the work and patience over the past couple of weeks.

Also, I would like to say that the tutor provided, Ray, was outstanding. A thorough gentleman, always professional, diligent, interested and concerned. Just a good decent young man on every front. I certainly believe that Ray deserves some acknowledgement and recognition, and that he set a standard in your organisation that would be hard to better, he is a great testament of quality that any organisation tries to deliver. We were always pleased to have him in our home and wish him all the very best in his future.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Pennant Hills Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Thornleigh West Public School.
