Set them on the right path. Helping them to understand concepts and develop skills (rather than just doing things for them) will mean that they can go on to use these skills themselves. This is very important for exam-taking. Communication. I ask for their input and check that they understand what I'm saying. I am patient and will explain a…

After confirming they've got a handle on a concept, emphasise practise and self-study. I believe this is important in ensuring they get enough time with a concept so as not to forget it. I believe I'm good at explaining concepts in more than one way and being patient. I enjoy interacting with the kids and it makes me genuinely happy when they…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to walk side by side with them. Although it is a certain subject that we teach to our students, it would be a shame if we just left it at that. I believe that tutors should walk with their students past just the subject, teaching them life skills as well. My biggest strength as a tutor…

A tutor must be student-centered and patient. One must understand the difficulties of the child in a certain learning area and must find ways to overcome these difficulties using the student's strengths. One must be patient enough to guide the students in learning and to help them overcome their fear and apathy of the subject. My greatest strength…

A tutor can build on what a child is doing in the classroom and teach in a tailored way to the students' abilities and personality. They can also build a close relationship with a student and make them feel comfortable in asking questions that they usually wouldn't ask in a classroom situation. I am a very patient person who is willing to try…

Make them feel confident in their abilities is definitely the most significant. Providing them with the skills to not only pass the exam or assessment but give them the ability to progress through school and further confidently. As someone who struggled with exams throughout high school, I feel I can bring some first hand experience and coping…

Inside ThornleighTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Tahlia focused on calculating percentage increase and decrease, including real-life applications like mark up, cost price, and discounts, completing extra questions from her test book for practice.

Year 9 student Malissa worked on simplifying algebraic expressions and revisited the topic of surface area with targeted review based on her recent test feedback.

Meanwhile, Year 4 student Hayes practiced division with remainders and applied BODMAS rules to fraction problems, before touching on area calculations for squares, rectangles, and circles.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for linear regression relied heavily on calculator methods without showing working, which made it harder to spot small errors or check understanding.

In a Year 8 English session, Ryan received feedback on his writing but did not act on it before the next lesson; as noted, he did not put the feedback into practice yet, so similar issues reappeared.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student sometimes mixed up units and tens columns in multiplication, leading to off-track answers. This meant time was spent correcting basics instead of advancing to new skills.

Recent Achievements

A Thornleigh tutor recently noticed a big shift in Tahlia, a high school student who used to hesitate when she got stuck—she's now actively asking questions and working through tricky algebra problems instead of giving up.

Another win came from Ashton, also in high school, who scored 93% on his term test after weeks of focused revision; he tackled log, trigonometry, and simultaneous equations confidently this time.

Meanwhile, Hayes in primary school showed real diligence by completing all his assigned maths problems before moving on to extra challenges during their session.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Yes, Lauren is fantastic!! Jesse is actually enjoying the work and doing Lauren's set homework (and it's the holidays)! Thank you so much!

thanks for your enquiry.  Isabella is enjoying her time with Manisha and the topics they are covering are all starting to sink in.  Isabella likes they way Manisha explains things to her and feels comfortable in asking questions. Manisha seems like a very capable person and I like her professional manner in all things.  At end of each lesson, she runs through with me what has been covered and leaves Isabella with some tips and exercises to go over during the week. I am pleased with how things are progressing and will continue until Isabella feels like she is at a place where she no longer requires assistance.

Yes, we have been very happy with how Cheyne and Juhi are getting along. Cheyne is feeling more confident about tackling her maths now and quite looks forward to her sessions with Juhi.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Pennant Hills Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Thornleigh West Public School.
