Tutor should guide the student to think independently and creatively. This enables the student to form their own ideas and understand a concept in from different point of views instead of just following steps and rules. These skills are crucial for a student especially in the latter part of their school life. When I teach, I will put myself in the…

For me, the most important thing is to always ask questions if there are any unclear parts of the lesson. Also, mastery is always important so practice is the key, esp. for Math. My strength as a tutor would be that I try to put myself on the student's shoes to determine the parts or method he or she might find…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do is listen. There may be other things going on either at home or at school that is preventing students from reaching their academic goals and the best way to foster a student-tutor relationship is to that you're there for them and that you understand what they're going through, in order to…

It would be empathy, in my opinion. I am aware that there are intelligent people who are easily able to surpass me in knowledge, but I believe that to effectively teach and learn, one must have a sufficient level of empathy. One need not always be a great teacher to be a great intellect. My capacity for empathy is unmatched. I can put myself in…

Instil them with confidence! Breaking down those confidence barriers a student might have could result in them tackling a question they would have never attempted otherwise. This also means persevering when they get answers wrong - they know they'll get there eventually. Another really important part of being a tutor is providing the student…

I believe that each student is different and so is their learning method. The ability to understand that and alternate the teaching style to cater for it is most important. I believe my strengths would be clear and concise communication. The ability to break down concepts and deliver them linking to real world examples so that students understand…

Remove the fear of not getting the one subject or one topic. As a teacher we must not just consider that two of our children is getting it ; but we should that why the others are not getting it . I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is understand and support them. A student excelling in their studies is not simply a routine of worksheets and practice essays, but learning simple yet effective methods for studying such as flash cards, mind maps and games. It also goes beyond studying and into routines students can…

The most important thing is to be flexible and non-judgemental. You have to be open to different challenges that the student may be facing beyond the subject. Each student is different and has different ways to learn and as such your teaching method should reflect this. I think my strengths are that I am patient but firm when teaching my students.…

Engage with them in such a way that the student actually wants to be at tutoring sessions. There is no benefit to tutoring sessions where the student has no respect or inclination to listen to a tutor. 1-on-1 or small group tutoring gives the student the attention that they may be lacking from a classroom environment, so this is the perfect…

I would consider some of the important things for a tutor to provide to a student are confidence and self belief. Giving a student the self confidence that they can do this will provide them with the tools to continue improving and getting better. I feel that from experience that most people who do not have confidence or belief struggle with a…

I believe it is motivating and teaching the student how to get the most out of their time studying in and outside of their tutoring session. Not only will this mean they learn more but Increasing ones ability to learn means the student will enjoy studying more (as if feels like they're making progress). Establish their confidence to solve the questions independently. That doesn't mean you don't help when they are stuck. I know the typical exam standard questions, and where people usually…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to inspire confidence, make them love learning, and equip them with the tools to thrive independently. Very easy to deal with. Lots of great tutors and they go to great lengths to match the right tutor to the students needs. If for any reason the tutor selected does not 'fit' with the students requirements, Ezymath are more than happy to keep trying alternate tutors until they find the right match.
TONY MCCORMACK, Toorak

Inside ToorakTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Raef worked through dividing large numbers by 8 using a breakdown strategy, compared fractions and decimals, and solved number pattern problems in his maths homework.

Year 8 student Lucette focused on surface area calculations as well as angles, trigonometry, and Pythagoras' theorem, tackling practice questions to reinforce understanding.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Maya practiced solving linear equations and inequalities along with simplifying algebraic expressions using index laws.

Recent Challenges

A Year 5 student hesitated to write out full working for maths problems, saying "I can do this in my head," which led to missed details—especially in multi-step word questions.

During a Year 8 algebra session, work was messy and unstructured; the tutor noted that "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

One Year 10 student did not complete homework before the lesson and struggled to recall last week's concepts, making it harder to tackle new material.

In another instance, a senior student forgot formulas due to scattered notes and weak organization. This left her searching for basics instead of building on them.

Recent Achievements

In a recent Toorak tutoring session, a Year 8 student who used to freeze up with linear equations began working through problems without hesitation, even explaining his logic aloud.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student—who'd often skip checking her answers—took the initiative to review and correct every question on her latest maths test, catching errors herself for the first time.

For a younger learner in Year 3, games and flashcards have transformed times tables from anxiety into something he looks forward to; last week, he confidently tackled division questions that once made him nervous.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Prahran / Windsor Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Geelong Grammar School - Toorak campus.
