Above all, a teacher should be compassionate. Compassion matters more than anything else. I feel that I try to understand students rather than simply trying to teach them. We all have weaknesses, and being able to identify them, especially when they are not easily visible, is the most important…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them want to study a topic, to present a topic in a certain way that makes the student more enthusiastic to learn. Although understanding a subject is extremely important, I believe the students' willingness to learn is equally important as trying to teach a student to…

I believe that listening to the student is among the most important things a tutor can do. It is imperative that the student feels comfortable to share concepts that they feel unfamiliar with, therefore building a relationship with them is crucial. Having a good understanding of the student's optimal way of learning is also beneficial to the…

I think that a tutor should not limit themselves to just subject knowledge. They should research more on effective teaching methods and strategies that might help them connect to their students more. They should develop practices that make a student's life easier and should understand the individual needs of the students. Often tutors have to…

A tutor can provide little tips and tricks to answering questions, especially in Math. Always be within reach, in terms of communication platforms, so that the student can clarify any doubts at any point in time. A tutor should also be flexible to the timings of the students yet not compromising on other students schedule. I am patient, clear…

I believe that a tutor should be able to build relationships with a student where the students are provided with an environment where they are heard and observed. I think this allows tutors to strategize methods in helping students progress, learn and succeed. This must be done with patience, constant assessment of student's progress, and…

Always know what students need and what's their priority. This means a tutor need to show respect to students. They need to know very well about the students and are wise and knowledgable enough to give good advice and make sure students love listening to the advice. I love to solve questions. To reassure them that having a tutor and needing a bit of extra help is nothing to be ashamed of. Moreover than learning the tasks, helping them feel they're capable of more than they think they are. I am able to think outside the box when it comes to tutoring and find that using mnemonics, rhymes and even little songs that may help students to…

Become students’ friends so you can lead the children to the book, most students don’t want study because the teacher is too strict and always pushing them, if the tutor can become their friends, they can lead the student to study voluntary. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to open a rapport that makes them feel safe and understood, an environment where they are not afraid to try and even not afraid to fail, in the knowledge that with help and direction they can try again and do better. With the acceptance that 1 style (or even 10 styles!) of teaching…

Communication is very important, as it is vital that the student is able to convey any questions, misunderstandings or opinions to the tutor for a tailored tutoring experience to occur. It is also at the same time that the tutor needs to be precise and straightforward with their explanation on different concepts. I think I generally build a…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to get a proper understanding of the level of mathematical 'maturity' of a specific student, rather than just assuming a certain background knowledge. Once this is established, it's possible to get the core of what exactly a student is struggling with (usually a particular fundamental concept) and…

The most important thing is trust that both tutor and student should have on each other. An ease of asking questions and making mistakes is another very important thing. According to me the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to instil confidence and positive mindset in a student which can empower the student to take on challenges. I believe firstly, students should not be pressured to do any task instead a tutor should make the task joyful and interesting for the student in such a way that they enjoy they are doing in every aspect. Inside TranmereTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Sienna focused on simplifying fractions and exploring equivalent fractions, using visual models to reinforce understanding.

In Year 10, Nick worked through differential calculus problems, including optimisation scenarios and sign diagrams for first and second derivatives.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Jessica tackled integral calculus by solving problems involving finding the area under a curve and also practiced interpreting results from statistics exam questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student working on algebra was encouraged to organise her written work more clearly, as scattered calculations made sign errors harder to spot—"she may also benefit from organising her working out more clearly to avoid confusion."

In Year 12 physics, a student struggled with drawing diagrams for kinematics questions and matching variables, which slowed progress during problem-solving.

Meanwhile, several senior students (Years 11–12) arrived at sessions without having completed assigned homework or revision tasks; one missed all set networks practice, leading to time being spent re-explaining concepts rather than building new skills.

Recent Achievements

One Tranmere tutor noticed a real shift with a Year 11 student who, after often guessing when stuck, has begun actively asking for clarification and working through mistakes out loud—this openness wasn't there just weeks ago.

In another high school session, a student who struggled to apply the sum and product rule in algebra was able to independently factorise several challenging problems without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who previously rushed through addition and subtraction now takes time to check her answers, catching errors herself before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Campbelltown Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's School.
