Inside TuerongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Finn revised Index Laws in preparation for an upcoming test and began developing note-taking techniques, later moving on to probability notation and interpreting outliers, measures of centre, and spread in statistics.

Year 9 student worked through plotting linear equations and finding their slope and intercept using both equations and graphs. Another Year 9 session focused on drawing line graphs from equations and determining x- and y-values, practicing with real data points for accuracy.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student's notes in algebra revealed a tendency to avoid writing out full working, with one tutor commenting, "he skipped showing steps in equations, which hid sign errors." This habit made it harder to spot and fix mistakes, especially when revising.

In Year 11, another student struggled with notetaking—his work on index laws often lacked clear step-by-step examples, so reviewing concepts later became confusing.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student was encouraged to "write out bigger problems rather than relying on working them out in her head," as mental calculation sometimes led to lost steps and unnecessary errors mid-solution.

Recent Achievements

One Tuerong tutor noticed a big shift in Finn, a high schooler who used to stay silent but now regularly "talks aloud" through problems and grabs pen and paper on his own without prompting—he even started tackling data summary questions independently.

In another session, Riley made clear progress with algebra: after weeks of struggling, he can now expand brackets confidently and solve nearly any linear equation without second-guessing.

Meanwhile, a younger student recently surprised her tutor by scoring 100% on her 7x tables after practicing new memorisation strategies she'd previously found overwhelming.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We are all very happy with Rebecca. Myself, my husband and especially Grace, which is wonderful. Rebecca and Grace's school teacher have spoken via email and are working together. I think it is too early to see any real progress, as you said we would expect to see a difference in the next couple of months. But for now we are glad Grace is getting the help she needs while enjoying the company of Rebecca.

Mitch has been so wonderful with Nick and is doing an amazing job tutoring Nick, especially getting Nick focused on completing his maths homework. He has worked with Nick so well and has established a great working relationship with him. His patient demeanor is certainly a strong attribute and has made tutoring for Nick so much easier.  Nick has commented several times that 'he has learnt more with Mitch today than he has all week with his teacher'.

I am delighted with Domenic's tutoring. I was concerned about how the tutoring would go because Jake struggles with a high level of anxiety but Domenic has put him at his ease.  He has engaged very well with my son, and is enthusiastic, encouraging, knowledgable and organised. He explains concepts in a way that Jake can grasp them: Jake has had at least one 'ah-ha' moment in every session. Domenic is also always punctual and polite. He has made a big difference already to Jett's confidence and performance at Maths. I look forward to having him continue to tutor Jake through his HSC.
