Work to build up the student's confidence. This can be done by teaching them not just how to study for a test, but how to understand the test's content. It is crucial that a student's problem solving and critical thinking skills be developed, as this enables them to approach new or harder concepts with the assurance that they have the skills to…

I think the most important thing a physics tutor can do for a student is recognise what, precisely, the student is struggling with and to tailor explanations of concepts in ways that the student will respond to. For example, a major conceptual hurdle for high school students can be learning about logarithms for the first time. Often the root of…

The most crucial part of tutoring is identifying and addressing a student's most significant weaknesses. Since teachers in school are focused on teaching the syllabus, they might not have time to cater to the needs of each individual student. Conversely, a physics tutor can spend time analysing someone's most common mistakes to find out which…

1. Give them a correct perspective 2. Encourage them to do better and try things, even if they do wrong they should be. That's how they will learn from mistakes and excel. Inside TurramurraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jack focused on consolidating subtraction and division, identifying these as areas for extra support while building confidence through arithmetic practice.

Year 10 Amy spent time reviewing a recent math test—clarifying mistakes in functions, probability, and integration—and then refined her comparative Module A English essay by strengthening structure and key paragraph elements.

For Year 11 student Lucas, the lesson centred on tackling probability trees and conditional probability before moving to advanced calculus concepts like interpreting first and second derivatives, using worked examples to target exam weaknesses.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Mathematics, one student tended to feel overwhelmed by multi-step trigonometry and geometric series problems, which led to difficulty expressing solutions algebraically.

A tutor observed, "She gets stuck when questions are wordy and can't always break them into manageable steps."

In Year 9 English, responses sometimes lacked flow and coherence between sentences within a paragraph, making arguments less persuasive under timed conditions.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student often left out working in division or fractions—resulting in repeated calculations when errors arose mid-solution. The result: time lost retracing steps instead of building confidence with new material.

Recent Achievements

One Turramurra tutor recently noticed a big change in a Year 11 student who had previously struggled with logarithms—this week, he not only understood and applied the laws of logs but also spotted and fixed his own errors without prompting.

Another high schooler who used to get stuck on function questions began connecting first and second derivatives to the original graph's behaviour, showing real independence in tackling integration as well.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student made the leap from guessing at word problems to confidently breaking them down and forming equations, finishing all his mental calculation tasks on his own.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We have just had our first session with John and I am writing to let you know how impressed I am with John. He was on time, polite and dressed professionally . His calm manner with Oliver was great. Oliver really enjoyed it and liked John very much . I am looking forward to many more positive sessions that result in Oliver improving .

Even though Brendan only has Gennady for a short time, but I can see a great improvement in his maths, also he seem to be more confident.  The feedback I got from Brendan is Gennady was very easy to understand, he tend to explain thing in a simple way, we tried many tutors before and wasted so much of his time.  I definitely recommend him for VCE specialist maths.

I would like to thank you for providing a wonderful service to us.  We were recommended to you by a friend of my daughters and this being the first time we had sought a tutor, we weren't really sure what to do or how to go about it.  You made the whole process simple and easy for us.  Even though the initial tutor didn't relate to my daughter, there was no problem with us changing to another tutor.  This wonderful young woman was just the right person for my daughter.  They both understood each other and my daughter approached her year 12 maths exam with so much more certainty and knowledge.  We won't know for a while yet, the result of the exam but my daughter feels very confident about it.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Turramurra Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Northside Montessori School.
