One of the most crucial roles a tutor can play is to ignite a student\'s passion for learning that transcends the confines of textbooks. It\'s about instilling the ability to think critically and creatively, and to explore new ideas independently. The ultimate achievement for a tutor is to witness their students not just absorbing information, but…

What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student are build self-confidence, without this they will not believe in themselves and their ability, and therefore will not make the improvements they are capable of, inspire them to create their own goals, both long-term and short term, big and small, and of course, help…

I try my best to create a safe, supportive environment where students feel encouraged to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. Confidence is key to overcoming challenges and taking ownership of learning, and it requires patience and understanding from the tutor. It's always important to understand and relate to the student, may it be sports,…

The most important thing for a tutor to do is understand exactly what that particular student does and does not understand. Many times I remember going to professors consultation hours in there office and asking them a question to which they gave me a long explanation which didn't even address my question leaving me more confused than before. A…

As a tutor remaining persistence and professional are two important qualities that I bring to any student I teach. Any student can learn and understand their true potential, this comes through clarity and how you explain things in a way that makes in easy to understand since all students learn in a different way. I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to have them gain confidence with themselves in terms of excelling in school. I think this confidence is important in not just getting high marks in quizzes and tests, but I believe that being confident will help them long-term in solving problems not just in school, even though…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student go beyond just teaching content. A tutor should help a child feel capable--- when students believe in themselves, everything else becomes easier. It's important to break concepts down simply, meet students where they are, and help them move forward step by step without overwhelm.…

To help a student walk the right path that he/she desires. A tutor should understand a students passion and dream and help them achieve this dream. Be their friend and role model. Students have already enough to deal with in school. They need someone to listen to them and help them to clarify all their doubts. In a nutshell, I think a tutor must be : --> A friend --> An academic trainer --> A mentor --> A planner As a tutor, i focus more on an overall development than just focusing on the…

Inside TurrellaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Grace practised converting decimals to percentages and vice versa, and also worked on calculating mean, mode, median, and range.

For Year 10, Thomas focused on factorising quadratic expressions (both monic and non-monic) using the PSF method and solved equations by completing the square and applying the quadratic formula.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Grace analysed T.S. Eliot's poetry for Module B, refined essay structures for English Advanced, and practised unpacking essay questions to develop stronger thesis statements.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 mathematics, one student hesitated to attempt harder algebra problems without textbook guidance—"needs more tries on more multiplication problems," a tutor noted—resulting in repeated practice of only familiar types.

For a senior student in Advanced English, feedback was often unaddressed between drafts; ideas discussed aloud were rarely incorporated into written essays, and her arguments leaned heavily on repeating class-taught terms rather than building with specific examples from texts.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner struggled to follow sentences line by line in reading tasks and skipped back-checking answers aloud, which made sequencing steps in worded math problems even more challenging during sessions.

Recent Achievements

A Turrella tutor noticed one Year 11 student who used to struggle with linking feedback to her writing now revises full essay drafts independently, making targeted changes for clarity and detail.

In Year 9 maths, a student who was hesitant with mean, mode, and median recently solved data questions without prompting and tackled converting decimals to percentages confidently.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who previously guessed at unfamiliar words has started pausing to sound them out before reading on—showing more patience and self-correction than before. Last session, she read the next chapter out loud with minimal help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Arncliffe Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Arncliffe West Infants School.
