What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁
When I’ve tutored classmates and friends in the past, I've always enjoyed being able to help someone understand something they've struggled with. I was tutored through years 11 and 12, so I understand how encouraging that feeling can be. I also like how teaching others helps to reinforce my knowledge, which helps me with university. Math and science are my favourite subjects, so I always enjoy discussing them and explaining concepts to people.
My Strengths as Tutor 💪
I have experience in both general and ATAR classes, graduating with 87% in maths applications, 89% in maths essentials, as well as 69% in ATAR human biology, so I consider my main strengths to be in maths and science. I have a wide range of experience with different learning styles gained through high school, doing a Certificate IV in nursing preparations, attending university, and being tutored myself. I also have ADHD, meaning I had to try many methods of studying and revising before finding one that worked for me. I also have helped tutor friends and classmates, both neurotypical.
Most important things I can do for a student 🏅
I had a really good tutor through year 11 and 12, helping me understand how important it is to make the students feel confident in themselves. I think the best way to do this is by creating a good relationship with them by providing a safe space to ask questions, focusing on what the students need and tutoring them in a way that helps each student learn the best.

Indianna was very engaged with our lesson and was willing to rewrite her cheat sheet when I explained how it can help with memorising and making it easier to read. She was able to complete surface area, volume, simultaneous equations, algebraic fractions and Pythagoras questions seemingly easier than in previous lessons.
The only noticeable struggle Indianna had today without her cheat sheet was with when to use Pythagoras to answer questions, we went through some tips on how to work it out that she is going to add to her cheat sheet.

When solving for unknown variables, Indianna quickly picked up on how to verify her answers with backchecking, as well as recalling knowledge from topics in previous years to apply to questions.
She seemed to have some difficulty understanding what surface area and volume actually meant, so she struggled with when and how to appropriately apply the formulas. We did work on this with real-life examples, which seemed to help, but I believe Indianna would benefit from spending a bit more time going over these topics.

After I explained the reasons behind the working out, Indianna seemed to grasp these concepts a bit easier than topics like surface area and volume. She was also able to identify when to use and apply BIMDAS, as well as backwards to solve for unknown variables.
I’ve noticed that Indianna will guess the answers to questions that she doesn't have the formula for, which is likely impacting her performance during tests. She doesn't have a cheat sheet for her maths tests yet, so we’re starting one next week to use in class and during tests so she won’t have to guess her answers.

Indianna was able to do surface area and volume calculations a lot easier with the formulas in front of her. She seemed to have retained more of the information from last week, correctly applying her knowledge of composite shapes, fractions, and algebra to a range of questions.
After Indianna’s exam, I believe she would benefit from working on her understanding of certain topics, specifically surface area and volume. Although she has improved a lot with being able to apply the formulas, the actual understanding of why we use these formulas hasnt fully “clicked” for her yet.
