Summary of Last Thursday's Lesson (27/06/2024) with Hudson: For this lesson, myself and Hudson went over some revision on the topic of Pythagoras and Trigonometry. This was in preparation for a maths test he was to take the following day (28/06/2024) at school. I felt to cover the lesson with different revision questions and incorporate the different concepts of each subtopic of this topic as we went forward and attempted each different question from the content covered. Most of the questions we attempted during this lesson were from Exercise 5.1 and Exercise 5.8. They were: Exercise 5.1 - Q1, Q2, Q8b), Q11, Q12, Q13, Q14, Q15 & Exercise 5.8 - Q1, Q3, Q7, Q12 and Q16. I felt Hudson understood a number of the concepts quite well as I explained them to him and applied them very well to all the questions we attempted. He really took on board the concept of SOH/CAH/TOA quite well I feel. He was able to apply this to Q8b, Q11, Q12 and Q13 by identifying what the correct trigonometric ratio needed to be used and evaluated correct answers for all questions stated. I really hope he did well on his test last Friday. Well done for Thursday last week Hudson. Learning Strategies demonstrated: Pen and Paper - This strategy was demonstrated quite ok by Hudson during this lesson I feel. He neatly wrote down all the questions we attempted together in his notebook and highlighted well what corresponding steps were needed to evaulate the different questions we attempted. I feel Hudson is consistently utilising this strategy well to his benefit. Talking Aloud - This strategy was also demonstrated by Hudson during last week's lesson. I encouraged him to talk out his answers and explain how they were to be evaluated in reference to the associated concepts and question/s being attempted. I feel Hudson did quite well in regards to this strategy. He's not afraid to go through the questions we attempt together and talk about them in how they are to be evaluated. That's good to see from Hudson. He's making an excellent effort to apply himself to all the content we go through in a given lesson. Well done Hudson for this.
I'm really happy with how Hudson has progressed with maths up to this point. He's consistently building on his understanding of the different topics we go through together and makes a good effort to attempt all the homework questions I set for him. I feel Hudson should keep doing what he's doing at the moment. Keep building on his understanding and learning of maths and go over/attempt further questions by himself to further reinforce the concepts of a given topic. I have found this works really well. I did this when I was in Year 9 and I was consistently at the top of my maths class. I see a lot more potential in Hudson. Let's try to bring that out as we go forward with further lessons. Have a great school holiday break Hudson and we'll see yourself when Term 3 starts up. :)

Summary of Last Friday's Lesson (21/06/2024) with Zack: For this lesson, we started with a new topic from the Edrolo resource - Chapter 6: Investigating Relationships Between Two Numerical Variables. We went through the first subtopic, 6A: Introduction to Scatterplots. We began by going through the concept/s of identifying the response and explanatory variables associated with scatterplots. Once this was completed, we then directed our attention to the concept of constructing scatterplots. Once we had got through this, we then moved onto the 6A questions and attempted the following: Q1, Q2 a) - d), Q3 a) - d), Q4, Q5, Q6 and lastly, Q10 which encompassed the question of Henderson, an independent research company that was conducting a research study on age and its impact on salary ($000βs), years of education, and weekly time on social media (hours). It asked the question, if a scatterplot was to be constructed for any of this collected data, what would the variable be on the horizontal axis? Zack stated the best option here would have to age as that fit the definition of the explanatory variable the best in comparison to the other variables that had been given. He was found to be correct in this instance. Well done Zack. Zack made comment that he felt he understood a lot of this subtopic and its associated concepts quite well. That's always good to hear from Zack. It shows he's applying himself to all the content we go through and is taking it in well. Well done for Friday, Zack. Learning Strategies demonstrated: - Pen and Paper - This strategy was well demonstrated by Zack during this lesson, I feel. All the questions we attempted together were concisely written down in his notebook highlighting how each question was to be evaluated. I really feel Zack's consistently using this strategy well during each lesson we have. - Seeking Understanding - This strategy was also well demonstrated by Zack during last Friday's lesson. There were moments during the lesson where Zack felt he didn't understand certain concepts fully, e.g. what the response variable was vs what the explanatory variable was. I was able to explain in clear, simple detail what each variable meant how how they were both related to scatterplots. Zack felt the way I explained this was a whole lot simpler compared to how he was taught it at school. He commented that he actually understood my explanation better than what his teacher showed him. I was quite humbled by that.
We've only just started this topic of scatterplots and there's a lot to cover. Zack's highlighted a good understanding of this topic so far. Let's continue with this and build upon it as we go forward with further subtopics. I want to see Zack consistently apply himself to this content and not get distracted by the finer details that may be associated with this topic. He's on a good path with his understanding of this topic. Just keep doing what you're doing Zack.

Summary of Today's Lesson (13/06/2024) with Ruby: For today's lesson, myself and Ruby attempted together Practice Test B which encompassed the topic of Coordinates and The Cartesian Plane. We undertook this practice test today as Ruby has a maths test tomorrow (14/06/2024) at school. This practice test was made up of a total of 14 questions. I felt Ruby really applied herself well today. She was very well focused and what confidence she demonstrated with every question that was attempted. Every answer she gave for the questions we did were practically spot on. There were a few answers Ruby had to think through before she got them correct. Other than that, I felt Ruby's understanding and learning of this topic was a sufficient level for tomorrow's test. She made comment that she was going to smash this test. Good luck Ruby for tomorrow. I hope you do well. You really have shown an excellent application of this topic of Coordinates and The Cartesian Plane. Learning Strategies demonstrated: Pen and Paper - This strategy was very much demonstrated by Ruby today. Her noting down of the questions we attempted was quite ok I feel, it could have been a little better. I made a point of encouraging Ruby to write down the questions with associated steps of how it was to be evaluated in a neat logical order. I feel she took on board this quite ok as well. Memory Pegs/Triggers - This strategy was demonstrated toward the end of today's lesson. The last question we attempted together involved stating times from a time displacement graph and explaining if the individual was able to sustain her times over a multiple week period. I commented to Ruby that this question was very similar to a question we attempted last week that involved a lifesaver undertaking a swim drill. Ruby made the comment that this question triggered ideas and concepts of what we covered in last week's lesson. That was good to see and hear from Ruby. Talking Aloud - I encouraged Ruby to talk aloud her answers as we progressed through each question today and try to explain what it meant in regards to the question being asked. I felt Ruby demonstrated this strategy really well today.
I'm very happy with how Ruby has progressed over these last four lessons so far. She's really applied herself well to the topics we've gone over, is really well engaged and demonstrates a good focus with this type of maths. She's reallyshowing some good confidence with everything I must say. For future lessons, I would ask if Ruby is able to get another notebook so she can write down everything that she needs to known and understand for a given subtopic/topic that we go through together. This will help in the long run, as she'll be able to review different concepts/ideas of a particular topic when a test or exam comes up.

Summary of Last Tuesday's Lesson (04/06/2024) with Zack: For this lesson, we began by going through the homework questions from Exercise 5B that I had set for Zack from the previous lesson. I was very happy with how Zack had attempted these given questions. Although there were a few slight errors in the answers given by Zack, he was able to provide a number of correct answers to these questions. Questions set were: Q2 a) - d) and Q12 a) & c). Once this was done, we further went over Q3 c) from this same exercise as Zack still was a little unsure of how to use operations with matrices. As we went through this question together. I pointed out what needed to be evaluated in regards to operators given on the different elements. We actually obtained the correct answer by following the concepts laid out in the given examples of this section. As we finished with the topic of matrices, we moved onto some financial analysis review questions. We got through 10 MCQ's based on the content from Chapter 2: Financial Arithmetic, which brought us to the conclusion of the lesson. All this revision was undertaken as ZACK was to undertake his mid-year maths exams last Friday. I do hope he did ok with his exam last week as he felt he understood the content quite ok when we ended last week's lesson. Learning Strategies demonstrated: - Pen and Paper - I feel this strategy was demonstrated quite ok by Zack during last week's lesson. He's taken on board this strategy quite well I feel. Every question we went through last week Tuesday was written down in his notebook neatly with all steps highlighted on how he was to evaluate a given question. Seeking Understanding - This was well demonstrated also last week by Zack. There were many questions Zack had in relation to the content on matrices. I felt it was very appropriate to go through the different concepts of matrices he felt he needed to understand better last week. This actually built upon his learning of matrices well.
There's always room for improvement concerning Zack. I would encourage Zack to consistently peruse the notes he takes in maths class, go over the concepts he doesn't understand fully understand a number of times if need be, make his own notes here and link it all together. This is a strategy/technique I did when I was still in high school and it worked wonders for myself. Keep doing your best Zack and build upon it as you go forward.
