A competent tutor should understand their student's needs, provide individualized attention, encourage and motivate, properly explain difficult ideas, and assess progress in order to change their teaching style as needed. The biggest strength of me as a tutor is that I am very patient. I keep trying until the student learn the particular topic…

There are various aspects that are very important to tutoring. Creating a positive and healthy studying environment for the students is extremely important. Tutors need to adjust their teaching methods to meet the learning needs of each individual student. Many students struggle with self-confidence in certain subjects, and tutors can play a…

The most important thing for a tutor is to increase the confidence of the students. As I have seen from the past experiences, most of the students have the ability to score good grades but due to the lack of confidence in the answer, they tend to doubt themselves and mess things up in the exam. Hence boosting the student's confidence while…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be a kind, and patient individual. So often people don’t want to ask for help especially students since they fear being judged or that their question won’t get answered. This is why I think being someone your student can trust is very important in helping them learn. Patient, good…

To give them confidence and make them feel good about themselves. There is nothing more counter-productive than making a student feel disheartened and bad about themselves, since self-doubt yields anxiety and often poor performance in exams. Establishing a basis of trust is vital for the success of the student, so that they feel in a safe space to…

The most important quality that a tutor needs is patience. It is crucial that a tutor takes their time to work out what their student's strengths and weaknesses are, so they can help the student improve. Then, they need to be ready to answer the students' questions as many times as they need to. They also need to articulate their knowledge in a…

Make them believe in themselves is the first thing that pops into my mind. To get a student who once thought a subject was boring or complicated into something at least "okay" in which they can see their potential in if they put in the work. To make a student understand things in an easy way. And be there for the students. I can find one students area of interest and as well as weakness and can concentrate on it. Also a tutor should have patience as one might have to explain something repeatedly. when we share knowledge it doesn't decrease instead it increases. That mentality is the…

A good tutor needs to have a variety of qualities in order to bring out the best in a student. Tutors need to be able to personalize learning, no two students learn the same and as such it would be incorrect to assume that the same teaching strategy will work for every student. Tutors should also not simply teach content to students, they need to…

Inside UnanderraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Isla practised simplifying fractions, mastering order of operations, and converting between fractions and percentages.

In Year 10, Noah focused on statistics concepts including mean and standard deviation while completing a homework assignment.

For Year 11, Natalia reviewed algebraic techniques in Chapter 2 and tackled final practice exercises to check her understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student working on algebra and linear functions often relied heavily on tutor support, hesitating to attempt problems independently; as one tutor noted, "she needs more practice one on one so that she can really understand what they have been taught at school."

In Year 10 data analysis sessions, feedback wasn't always acted upon between lessons—solutions reviewed in-session were rarely revisited afterwards.

Meanwhile, a primary student tackling addition and subtraction sometimes forgot whether the task was addition or subtraction when working quickly, leading to confusion mid-question. Missed opportunities for self-review meant misunderstandings lingered into the next lesson.

Recent Achievements

One Unanderra tutor noticed a big change with a Year 10 student who used to get stuck on algebra problems and wait for answers, but now works through solutions step-by-step and only asks targeted questions when truly needed.

In Year 11 English, another student has started breaking down essay tasks into smaller steps rather than freezing up at the planning stage—she even tried summarising her own content before asking for help.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who previously rushed subtraction has begun carefully marking her "tens" during long addition and submitted homework without any mistakes this week.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Hello and thank you for your email. We are happy with Philip's progress in these few weeks as you suggest I am sure more time is needed for him to be more confident . We are also happy with his tutor he is very well spoken, polite and gets on well with my son so far.

Thanks Gene, so far, Jamie's response has been very good.  He has had 2 lessons to date, as last week was cancelled at our request (he was away on camp). Jamie has responded very well to Eshan, who's approach is unassuming, gentle, but persuasive and constructive.  Jamie actually looks forward to spending time with Eshan to teach him his Maths strategies. We look forward to seeing Eshan again next week. Thanks also for the newsletter.  I have to say that I think your supportive written material is very useful!

All is great with Nathan. He's a lovely man and April has her block testing for maths tomorrow and she's confident- a good sign. April will now have a couple of weeks break due to holidays but Nathan will certainly be coming back. April quietly winges  about the homework Nathan sets for her but we don't interfere and are glad that Nathan makes sure its completed as April's attitude to maths was pretty bad.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Eagle Vale Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Pius X Catholic Primary School.
