I believe that a tutor should be able to build relationships with a student where the students are provided with an environment where they are heard and observed. I think this allows tutors to strategize methods in helping students progress, learn and succeed. This must be done with patience, constant assessment of student's progress, and…

According to me the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to instil confidence and positive mindset in a student which can empower the student to take on challenges. Developing a love for learning also goes a long way, as a tutor teaches a subject which he likes he can encourage curiosity and passion for the subject in his students…

Recognising what the student requires and teaching it accordingly is one of the critical teaching factors. After teaching a specific section, it is essential to question the student on the respective topics to understand whether the student understood the basic concept of the section I believe every student has a different capacity. As a student,…

It is important for a tutor to listen to a student and to learn what their strengths, struggles, and goals are. It is then important for a tutor to communicate in a clear and engaged manner, to ensure that material is described in an effective way. Tutors should also be open to all questions from students and should address these as much as…

A tutor can provide little tips and tricks to answering questions, especially in Math. Always be within reach, in terms of communication platforms, so that the student can clarify any doubts at any point in time. A tutor should also be flexible to the timings of the students yet not compromising on other students schedule. I am patient, clear…

To me, the most important thing a tutor can do is to foster a supportive and positive learning environment. This is because it is important to create a safe and encouraging space where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and improvements. It is also important for the tutor to tailor the teaching approach to each individual…

Become students’ friends so you can lead the children to the book, most students don’t want study because the teacher is too strict and always pushing them, if the tutor can become their friends, they can lead the student to study voluntary. Being able to teach a student enough material for them to be able to pass the class, that is what you are being paid to do. I consider time, listening, and encouragement as the important things a tutor can do for every student. I believe that the starting point is to look into where the student is coming from to better assess what the problem is. Then, a tutor should acknowledge that everyone learns at a different pace and with a distinct learning style. Some…

A tutor can be a guiding light for students. Each student has their own way of absorbing the information that they are taught. This might not always be available to students in a large classroom setting. A good tutor recognizes the strengths and weaknesses of the students and guides them accordingly. The most important thing is trust that both tutor and student should have on each other. An ease of asking questions and making mistakes is another very important thing. Its okay to make mistakes but if your student is afraid of you , they would never ask questions and will be afraid to make mistakes so the tutor will never be able to…

Tess is tutoring my daughter, Zoe, in Year 7 Maths. Although we are early in the journey Zoe has already gained confidence in her ability. Tess helps her feel comfortable and confident that she can achieve her goals. I am very pleased that I have Tess to assist Zoe and provide her with the support she needs.

Inside UnderdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Emma worked on recognising and ordering decimal numbers, as well as rounding decimals to the nearest tenth.

In Year 8, Jack focused on expanding and simplifying algebraic expressions using brackets, along with solving worded problems by rearranging equations to find x.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Sarah tackled trigonometry skills such as using sine, cosine, and tangent ratios to solve for unknown sides in right-angled triangles, applying these methods to homework and real-world examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 English, a student avoided integrating quotes into sentences, which made their arguments less persuasive; as noted, "she can work on clearly explaining why [quotes] support her arguments."

In Year 8 Maths, skipping steps when calculating the surface area of complex shapes led to confusion and lost marks—one tutor observed that "missing a step… is vital to the accuracy of the answer."

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student mixed up numerator and denominator when saying fractions aloud, making it difficult to check understanding in class.

In all cases, these habits left students second-guessing their answers or hesitating during independent tasks.

Recent Achievements

One Underdale tutor recently noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who, after weeks of struggling to rearrange linear equations, was able to independently find the equation of a line from two points and even completed her homework with barely any help.

In another session, a high schooler working on science reports moved from being unsure about interpreting experimental data to confidently using advanced scientific language in her practical report write-up.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to rush through reading is now pausing to re-read sentences for meaning and starting to use a dictionary during lessons without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Thebarton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Nazareth Catholic College - St Gabriel Centre Campus.
