Not just simple topic understanding but also inspiring the individual to continue to pursue an understanding in their studies in a holistic sense. My strength in mathematics by far. I'm currently completing a dual degree in business management and mathematics at UQ. I would also say i am quite personable and come across as very…

For me its the concept of instilling confidence. So often children are discouraged by a challenging question and then feel incapable and worthless. This is wrong on so many levels and child should ever feel this way. The most important things a maths tutor can do is instill confidence in children through patiently encouraging them to never give up…

The most important and vital thing that a maths tutorcan do for a student is not only the lesson itself but also the essence/importance of the study or subject matter with a touch of personality and values development. Growing up I'm a self learner and always have the passion for continuous learning and I see that as a strength. Also, I have a…

To never be frustrated or condescending towards a student as it undermines their ability to learn and stops them from asking questions. I am patient, and always try to break it down for students in to more easier to learn challenges. I try to identify places where students struggle and help them overcome their…

The most important thing that a maths tutor can do is to be patient. It can be extremely easy for students to become frustrated with themselves when learning something new, so the best thing to do is to be patient and easy going so as to alleviate any further stress. We're only human, so we simply have to treat each other like it. I am a great…

Gives their students confidence, after all, it has been proven that "fake it till you make it" works to some degree. Helping with time management. This would involve giving pointers into what they should spend more time studying on their own, as well as identifying their weak points and using their time wisely to strengthen those topics. This…

Help them understand problems in a way that they cxan best understand and conceptualize. Not every child will respond to the same teaching method so its about getting to know them and how they learn as well. Lead them in the right way of thinking and solving complicated problems. The most important thing would be to train the students to be able to think and research subjects with their own capability. Understanding the student's lack of knowledge and missing points, and explain subjects accordingly so that everything is clear. Trying to understand…

Inside Upper CabooltureTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Darell revised prime and composite numbers, square and triangular numbers, and worked through exam-style questions.

In Year 9, Rebecca focused on simplifying ratios and multiplying/dividing like terms using her homework exercises.

Year 11 student Joshua tackled trigonometry questions with a focus on the cosine rule and also began working through quadratic equation problems to support his current unit.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student skipped writing out steps in algebra, leading to confusion when errors needed correcting; as one tutor put it, "he sometimes skips ahead a few steps which could lead to mistakes being made."

In Year 10, difficulty with keeping maths notes organized meant that recalling formulas for statistics was slower and less reliable during practice questions.

A Year 5 learner avoided attempting more complex word problems, often giving up quickly if the answer wasn't obvious—this hesitation blocked chances to build confidence through gradual problem-solving successes.

Missed homework in Year 4 also limited reinforcement of multiplication skills.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Upper Caboolture recently noticed Joshua, a Year 11 student, starting to study more on his own and actively asking questions when stuck—something he was hesitant to do earlier in the term.

Rebecca, in Year 9, now readily admits when she doesn't understand a question and tackles unfamiliar topics by asking for clarification instead of guessing.

Meanwhile, Summer (Year 5) is beginning to solve maths problems independently and only needs a couple of hints before getting the right answer. In her last session, she worked through fraction grouping almost entirely without help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Caboolture Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Minimbah State School.
