It is vital that a tutor gives a student the feeling of being empowered - that they are part of assisting the student to develop their own skills that they can then move forward and use independently. Developing analytical ability, intellectual curiosity and a sense of achievement from even small study goals should be targets for tutors working…

The main focus should be teaching the subject in question in the most simple and interesting manner. Catering to each student’s level of understanding and knowing the correct speed at which I should proceed in order for the student to perceive the subject is also of immense importance. I think the most important things a tutor can do is to instill confidence in a student. In the past, I had dealt with tough and frustrated students with patience and empathy. I try to make a student become confident by being a supportive friend more than a tutor. I do my best to create a comfortable environment where students can open up,…

The most important thing about being a tutor is definitely creating output for the student as effectively and efficiently as possible. However, this cannot be done in a way where the student feels obliged to come to your sessions to study. They must enjoy the environment so that they are doing this happily and to their own accord. I am persistent,…

I think the best thing a tutor can do is help the student to complete their learning cycle. So the student can continue doing it by themselves. The idea is to be a temporary guide in their academic journey that they need support. 1. Strong background in Maths. 2. Patience 3. I like to listen and motivate students to do their best. 4. Good…

A student (or student's parents) hires tutors to teach them what they cannot learn from teachers at school. As such, the teachers must be failing to accommodate for the conflicting teaching/learning styles. Providing a student with a high degree of attention and a tutoring style suited to their learning style would develop the student's knowledge…

Inside Upper Mount GravattTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Shani focused on probability and data analysis, including interpreting simple statistics and practicing basic probability scenarios.

In Year 10, Lara worked through the discriminant in quadratic equations and reviewed linear equations, reinforcing her algebra skills with targeted practice questions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Savio tackled arithmetic and geometric sequences by building recurrence models from information given and practiced rearranging algebraic equations using a step-by-step approach.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, incomplete homework became a pattern—one student "didn't finish the homework I gave," making it harder to build confidence with algebraic conversions.

In Year 10, a student shared she "finds it difficult to motivate herself to study for exams and usually procrastinates until the last minute," which left her rushed during practice sessions and less able to handle time pressure.

A Year 11 student relied on mental calculations in equations, skipping written steps; as noted, "it's better to write down the working steps out than doing mental maths." This made tracing errors nearly impossible under exam conditions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Upper Mount Gravatt noticed that a Year 10 student, who previously struggled to organise her thoughts for English assignments, began catching her own run-on sentences and correcting them independently by the end of their session.

In Year 8 maths, one student who used to quietly guess at answers started openly asking questions whenever unsure—showing real initiative that hadn't been there before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student managed to finish all target questions on time for the first time after weeks of needing reminders, handing in her completed worksheet without any prompting.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Ayon has been a wonderful tutor for Connor and he now feels that he is coping very well with his journey into HSC. He has learnt a lot with his tutor and is now studying hard with a lot more understanding. I would like to thank you.

We are very happy with Michael and Caroline's confidence has already improved thanks to his support.

Madison has now had two sessions with Emma, they seem to be going well, Emma is very personable, has been working on some practice sheets with Madison for an upcoming maths test.  All seems well so far.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Garden City Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Upper Mount Gravatt State School.
