Help them build confidence to believe they can succeed. Being able to explain topic areas in different ways, using plain language to help them understand. I also strongly believe in teaching students core study skills to build structure to their problem…

Inside VerdunTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Ben reviewed algebraic techniques including the substitution and elimination methods for solving simultaneous equations, and began tackling measurement questions involving Pythagoras' theorem.

In Year 9, Mia focused on factorising polynomials and practiced graphing linear equations using provided examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Lily revised logarithms in preparation for an upcoming test and worked through exam-style questions to reinforce her understanding of rearranging algebraic expressions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, a student often skipped showing working, as noted: "He needs to work on focusing more and not rushing questions." This led to sign errors that went unnoticed until the end of the task.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student struggled to explain reasoning in geometry; without writing down steps, test answers lacked clarity—costing marks even when understanding was solid.

In primary maths, one student's tiredness meant homework was left incomplete or done reluctantly after prompting.

For another, messy layout when lining up numbers ("writing neatly and remembering to use an eraser") caused calculation slips during addition problems.

Recent Achievements

A Verdun tutoring session saw one Year 11 student who previously struggled with silly mistakes in algebra now slowing down during practice to check each step, noticeably reducing those small errors that cost marks before.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student started using her own strategies—like jotting key information and double-checking answers—which is a big shift from last term when she'd rush and miss details.

In primary, Jay began catching his own times tables mistakes and correcting them on the spot rather than waiting for hints, ending the lesson by filling out all rows unassisted.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

I also wanted to say Matthew has been absolutely fantastic, he has a great manner and is very patient.  Anja's maths has definitely improved. i suspect we will need a tutor again in the second half of next year hopefully Matthew is available then.  I will certainly recommend your service to others.   I also wanted to say thank you for all the fabulous resources you offer.

Jacinta is awesome!  Grace has connected well with her, and even after 3 sessions we can see an improvement (in her methods and her confidence).  Grace had Year 9 exams this week and felt better prepared.  I can honestly say this has been the best investment I could have made for Grace!

I thought you would like to know that Matilda got the highest mark in her class for her end of year Math exam 83%. We were so thrilled and it gave her a huge confidence boost! I would like to thank you and Erin and we look forward to continuing her tutoring next year.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stirling Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like The Hills Christian Community School.
