Actually engage and interact with the student to find where, and more importantly why they're struggling or need help. This not only is a short term solution to a single question which may be raised, but is extremely helpful in the long run as their problem solving skills and overall performance improves. Also, make sure the student actually…

Support and believe within the student that they can do it. They are only limited with what they think they think they can achieve, if a student sees their tutor believe they can do it than definitely they will drive their own development. I am very patient and I can see conceptual gaps within a students thinking which further helps them develop…

I am confident that everyone has the ability to achieve great results given the right amount of effort and proper guidance. Tutors are valuable to a student, and offer something unique. For one, meaningful relationships can be built and developed in tutoring, which in turn builds engagement. From my personal experience, learning comes more easily when the teacher strives to craft close relationships with students. From the tedium of the classroom, tutors can also…

Having faced challenges in Science during my high school, I am aware of the problems students face in understanding complex mathematical concepts. My method is to build a strong relationship with the student. The student should not take me as a teacher but more like a friend or brother whom the student can confide in. They should discuss their…

I think above all else, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them and give them the necessary skills and understanding to be able to work independently, and to better understand the studying strategy that suits them best. It is important that a tutor is able to teach a student but more important than this is that a…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to enrich their understanding and reinvigorate or catalyze a passion in a particular subject. Nowadays, a student's passion for a particular subject dwindles as they go further and further into their high school career. This may be due to external factors such as pressure or…

The most important thing a tutor can do is believe in the student. This along with teaching them the value of hard work is significant as it pushes a student to access their potential knowing that they are supported. The value of hard work is also an imperative that should be conveyed through the tutors lessons regardless of the content taught. I…

Be encouraging - Student's won't understand something straight away and this can be a source of discouragement for them. The last thing they need is a tutor who refuses to acknowledge this. Instil confidence in one's ability and a good work ethic. If a tutor can instil confidence in the student, so that no matter their skill level they know they can perform to the best of their ability, than I believe that's one of the most important achievements they can do. Confidence is key in school and in life, and if the student doesn't believe…

Inside Voyager PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Lara worked through right-angled trigonometry and bearings, applying diagrams to visualise angle problems.

For Year 8, Ethan practised factorising algebraic fractions and also tackled multiplying and dividing fractions in context.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Michael focused on negative integers—adding, subtracting, and multiplying them—and reviewed strategies for exam-style questions involving these concepts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student working on algebra was observed hesitating before writing answers, often second-guessing herself even when the process was correct; "she needs to be more confident in her calculations," one note read.

In Year 4 maths, there were repeated instances of confusing times tables and forgetting to add a zero in multiplication, causing her to pause mid-problem and check with the tutor for reassurance.

When tackling negative integers in Year 9, confusion set in after -15, slowing progress and increasing uncertainty.

These moments led to lost momentum during lessons and reliance on immediate feedback rather than independent practice.

Recent Achievements

One Voyager Point tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to wait for correction now spotting her own mistakes and trying extra questions without prompting, especially in algebra.

Another high school learner is getting quicker at identifying when to use formulas for similar triangles, and has started explaining his reasoning out loud—something he avoided before.

With a Year 4 student, there's been real progress memorising times tables; she now attempts the 7s and 8s by herself after struggling with recall last term, and last session completed all the division sums independently.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Panania Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Holsworthy Public School.
