The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is not only to teach them how to solve problems, but also the way of thinking to solve them and applying the experience to use their skills in life. In addition a tutor can share their experiences with their students on how he or she developed a clear understanding of a particular subject and can explain the real life applications of the subjects that the students study. 1. Give them a correct perspective 2. Encourage them to do better and try things, even if they do wrong they should be. That's how they will learn from mistakes and excel. I think I focus on basics, and can see from the perspective of a student. What the student wants and how the students wants is something I think can gauge…

I think the greatest gift a tutor can provide to a student is support. School can often be an isolating and intimidating experience, and often students, despite being remarkably talented, feel afraid to take risks and go beyond what is expected of them. A tutor can also make the learning experience far more rewarding and enjoyable. Students feel…

The most important thing is helping someone develop a passion for the subject so that they want to learn more. If a tutor can help a student retain even a small percentage of that, its an amazing achievement. Most of the…

It is most important for a tutor to engage with the student, so that they will be more inclined to be attentive and take the lessons seriously. Fiona, Wahroonga

Inside WahroongaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Mia worked through calculating area and perimeter as well as practicing addition and subtraction for accuracy.

In Year 10, Ethan focused on solving trigonometric equations and revising the use of the quadratic formula to find roots of parabolas, using worked examples.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Grace tackled factorisation of algebraic expressions and reviewed linear systems by working through simultaneous equation applications from recent classwork.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student often left homework incomplete, particularly on networks, making it difficult to build fluency before exams—"needs to complete homework provided."

In Year 7, messy written work in measurement meant marks were lost when working steps weren't shown.

A senior student (Year 11) avoided attempting harder trigonometry questions, focusing only on familiar problems and losing confidence with new material.

Another Year 12 student relied heavily on the formula sheet during revision rather than memorising key formulas; this slowed progress in timed conditions.

When feedback was given on careless errors in algebra, it was not always acted upon immediately.

Recent Achievements

One Wahroonga tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to avoid seeking clarification now actively asks questions when stuck, especially during trigonometry sessions—this shift has made her much quicker at correcting mistakes.

In Year 12 maths, another student who previously hesitated with worded problems recently showed new independence by forming equations on his own and identifying where he'd gone wrong without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who struggled with step-by-step problem solving managed to follow each stage for finding x and finished all ten practice questions accurately in their last session.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Thank you for your email received today. I am very pleased to report that we are very impressed with Minh and his approach to tutoring our son. Minh is a very responsible and passionate teacher, we feel his enthusiasm will promote Elijah-Taye to the required level in a reasonable time frame.

Thank you for your follow up.  Ty is progressing well and we are all happy with the way things are going (mum, dad and Ty).  Apart from the normal issues, that sometimes he just 'doesn't feel like it' at the beginning of the session, he enjoys the tutoring and is gaining benefits already.  Though Ty has always had quite a good understanding of Maths, the idea of tutoring was to keep him at his best.  He was complaining of not understanding his teacher this year, so the different ways of thinking and and ways of teaching are definitely helping. I am happy with Sheetal and his dedication to his tutoring, even ringing Ty to check his progress before an assessment.  This is not something that I was expecting, but is a welcome addition as I see it helping Ty keep focused as well.

Thanks for the email. We are very happy with Lisa. She is bright and keen and has established a very easy rapport with Xiao. Xiao actually really likes her. We feel very confident that Xiao will continue to make progress with her maths.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Turramurra Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Knox Grammar School - Wahroonga Preparatory Campus.
