The most important thing a tutor can do isn't just to lead them to the right answers but help them build confidence and self-motivation. As a tutor, I aim to help students develop independence. For me, a successful teacher is someone who can guide students to no longer needing one. I am quick to identify the strengths and weaknesses of students…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to remember their position when they were at their student's age, the difficulties they faced while learning and sharing their experiences with passion to their students so they do not have to face such difficulties while learning. My strengths which may be beneficial as a tutor are…

Inside WalloonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Emily worked on overtime pay and penalty rates, alongside strengthening her understanding of order of operations through visualisation strategies.

Year 8 student Mia focused on reviewing classwork around triangles, angles, bearings, and algorithms, as well as simplifying fractions and practicing linear equations.

For Year 11 student Josh, the session centred on bivariate data analysis—specifically interpreting scatter plots and distinguishing between dependent and independent variables for his class investigation task.

Recent Challenges

In recent senior lessons (Years 10–12), incomplete or missing notes have been a recurring issue; for example, "notes needed to be made where Emily forgot the formula," and in another case, her notebook was left at school, making it impossible to check her classwork.

In Year 11 mathematics, skipping written summaries led to confusion with algebraic methods during revision.

At the junior high level (Year 8), struggles with organizing material meant that she often relied on memory instead of structured notes—this created extra difficulty recalling steps when tackling equations.

In a Year 5 grammar session, messy work habits also slowed feedback and improvement.

Recent Achievements

One Walloon tutor noted a big shift for a Year 11 student who, after struggling with algebraic equations for months, now solves linear problems more independently and has begun double-checking her answers—something she previously avoided.

Another high schooler showed new initiative by tackling her PSMT maths project with detailed self-written explanations, instead of relying on copied notes as before.

In primary years, a younger student who used to guess during division questions is now pausing to ask clarifying questions before answering. Last week, she finished all ten division problems without needing hints.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Cassidy has had one session with Scott. Cassidy came home very positive, saying that Scott was great at explaining concepts and that he will benefit from his tutoring support. Cassidy related well with Scott and seemed very impressed by his level of knowledge and by his academic progress at university. In effect, Scott is a great role model for Cassidy. I hope this all continues well.

Thanks for your email, Mitchell is really excited to have Ken as his tutor, he made a great impression when he came along for a chat and that high expectation has continued. He has a natural way with him and engages well with Mitchell, unlocking the mysteries and some tricks to understanding Math. We also like that Ken is a skilled tutor in many subjects so are looking forward to a long term relationship with him as a mentor for Mitchell. Someone that has worked hard to achieve success which is what we all want for our children. Thanks again I feel this match will be a good one.

Yes we are very happy with Jacinta. She is lovely and Emily likes her. She seems to be very suited to Emily, as she has a very practical approach to helping Emily with her Math's, and understood straight away what Emily's basic needs were. We look forward to Jacinta tutoring Emily this year.
