I consider the most important thing a maths tutor can do is to ensure the students are able to appreciate the studies they are undertaking. I feel the most important factor in learning is one's own motivation, and from personal experiences, this is linked with how much the subject is appreciated and enjoyed. Thus I recall how many students feel a…

Giving confidence to the student is the most important thing. If the student is not confident in their ability to do the task, then they will believe that they can not and will not try. Understanding the frustrations that the student can have because they don't understand something, staying calm and patiently taking the student through the problem…

I believe being patience is the most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student, due to the fact that different student will have different learning rates. Being patient with a student doing their best to solve something shows what really makes a good tutor. I believe that I have the determination, patience and will power as a tutor which…

The most important things are: 1. Provide an environment where genuine learning is encouraged. 2. Provide an environment to enjoy what you do so that it provides the motivation for the student to succeed. 3. Act as a coach / mentor for the student rather than as a teacher. 4. Tailor your approach so that it matches the student's learning…

I think the most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to listen, and to be a pillar of support they can lean on not only in their academics, but also in their personal lives. High school can be a really stressful period for students, not only in the immense pressure that students are under but also with the dramatic shifts their…

From the perspective of a past student who's worked with tutors. I've found the best environment to learn is one that feels inviting and open to questions. I hope I can build such an environment where students do not feel worried about asking questions or use me as a resource to aid their learning. Furthermore, I think it's paramount that a maths…

A tutor should be an educator, a mentor and at times, a comforting friend. A tutor must first and foremost teach, and grow the student academically through teaching of new information or the reinforcement of old skills. A tutor can also mentor a student, all for their growth and development outside of just the classroom. This can come from a…

One of the most important things a maths tutor can do is be patient and supportive. Different people learn different things in different ways, and at different rates. A tutor must cater for that, and not skip over important things that students have not yet understood. A tutor must use the method of explaining/teaching that students will…

I consider the most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to help them understand anything they are having trouble with, as that is the main reason why students get tutors. The ability to make someone understand something they do not is a major key because it instills confidence in the student and ultimately leads to them solving…

I believe that a maths tutor needs to communicate with the student about their needs. I think that if the student and the tutor communicate well and both parties understand each other, then it will help the student tremendously. They will be willing to ask questions and participate during the lesson. I am an approachable person. I feel like my…

I would consider communication as the important things as a maths tutor can do for a student. I would ask them if they need extra help and see if I can find a way to cool down their concerns. I believe that I have the patience to teach my students while they keep struggling in the issues. I believe that no one knows everything and I am assisting…

A great tutor should be an all-around mentor, someone who not only provides academic support but also helps students build resilience, confidence, and a positive outlook on learning. This involves fostering true critical thinking and problem solving skills to ensure students understand the ‘why’ behind each problem, not just the answer. A…

I think the most important thing would be to take interest in each student. I've found that when you take interest in a student, you care about them which helps everything else fall into place. It allows you to be patient and teach them effectively until they understand, as well as a more genuine approach which tends to help them to be more…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is offer an environment where they can comfortably learn and raise any concerns or questions they might have. This comes from building a good relationship with the student, which often not many tutors do, making the student's learning ineffective. Offering an organised and well thought…

I believe that there is no easy way in tutoring, the same as there is no easy way to get the answer. Whenever they are stuck it is our job to guide them through and companying them along. Whenever there are difficult times, give out the answers is never the way to solve the problem. I'm very patient when teaching my students, I wouldn't mind…

Inside Wantirna SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Zoey worked on rearranging algebraic expressions for graphing and solving quadratic equations, as well as reviewing LCM, factors, and long division to prepare for her non-calculator exam.

In Year 9, Amy focused on surface area of 3D objects by tackling textbook questions and practicing backchecking techniques, along with revising atoms and isotopes for an upcoming science test.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Mia strengthened her understanding of financial maths concepts such as compound interest and depreciation through targeted homework review and real-world application problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student in maths often avoided writing out full working when facing unfamiliar problems, leading to jumbled steps and confusion; as one tutor noted, "her working out was sometimes incoherent because she hesitated to write unless sure."

In Year 10 financial maths, missing a single tax calculation step meant every subsequent answer was affected.

For a senior student tackling algebra and trigonometry, revision focused mainly on easy material instead of challenging questions—this limited their ability to adapt in new contexts.

During an English task, uncertainty about how to start an essay caused significant delays before any writing began.

Recent Achievements

One Wantirna South tutor noticed a Year 10 student who previously missed simple marks due to untidy maths writing is now consistently setting out solutions with clear steps and correct units, which has helped avoid small but costly errors.

A Year 8 student, after struggling to rearrange algebraic expressions for several weeks, began applying the techniques independently this week and even tackled new graphing problems without prompting.

In a recent primary session, a Year 4 student who used to guess answers in long division now talks through each step aloud and checks her own work before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Knox Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Wantirna South Primary School.
