I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to deepen/ignite their interest in the area which they are teaching or make a student come to love a subject they struggled with before. Furthermore, as a tutor, I feel that helping a student build a strong foundation of knowledge is important as future knowledge they learn would…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to provide a comforting and trustworthy space. One where students are able to confidently express their questions without judgement and have fun while learning. My strengths as a tutor is my ability to notice when a student is not paying attention or my ability to simply explain challenging concepts and…

Throughout my tertiary studies, I have found that the key to learning anything is finding the point of interest for a person and developing that area so that the subject as a whole becomes enjoyable. For any student, progress will naturally vary and giving them that support and encouragement to persevere and overcome hurdles in their learning is,…

A tutor should be dedicated to his job, which is to facilitate his student to learn things in a easy and practical manner. Learning should not be boring, instead should be fun. Besides that tutor should be friendly to the student and have patience to make them understand the things that he delivers. I am a person who can teach any type of students…

To a greater extent success depends on the students` commitment to their studies, not as much what we as tutors do. Listen, I believe as a tutor the most important thing to do is listen to what the student has to say, whether it is problems, curiosities, or more. Tutoring is not primarily about teaching but supporting and trying to understand the children for who they are. Different students have different ways of learning as well as ways they feel comfortable…

I believe that it’s essential that the tutor can not only offer unique approaches to questions that other resources such as their school doesn’t provide, and I think it’s important that the tutor gives each student individual attention to ensure every student is benefiting to the highest ability. Truly personalise the learning. Incorporate connections to the student's interests. Teach to the student's strengths. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to make sure that the student feels comfortable and safe while being taught. This is so that they have an easier time learning the information rather than being constantly stressed out. I also think, as a tutor we should put in the effort to analyse in which type of learning the student…

Fiona, Warrandyte

Inside Warrandyte SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student worked on adding and multiplying fractions with different denominators, as well as converting fractions to decimals.

For Year 9, Sarah practiced simplifying expressions involving surds and rationalising denominators.

In Year 10, Daniel reviewed the discriminant to determine the number of roots for quadratics and solved quadratic equations using the quadratic formula, also practicing simplification of surds and indices.

Recent Challenges

Needs to try working independently and thinking actively instead of just waiting and copying the solutions. This slowed their confidence in tackling unfamiliar arithmetic.

In Year 11, one student relied heavily on notes during matrix operations and struggled when asked to solve without help; messy layout also made reviewing errors difficult.

A senior Methods student brought an excessive bundle of notes into revision sessions, making it hard to locate key formulas quickly—leaving them pressed for time during test planning.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Warrandyte South recently noticed a big shift for one Year 11 student who started openly acknowledging mistakes during revision, rather than feeling flustered or rushing ahead—she now stops to reflect and then applies new strategies from past lessons.

Another high school student, Sanjeev, had previously hesitated to ask questions but has begun raising his own points of confusion when tackling matrices; once explained, he quickly applies the concepts himself.

In Year 6, Tyler showed newfound independence by completing two and a half worksheets in one session without reminders or prompts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Warrandyte Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Donvale Christian College - Hall Road Campus.
