Give the students the right studying tools (like time management or exam preparation for example). Stduents have to understand that being a successful at school isn't about being naturally gifted, but rather about being driven and methodical. I used to be a struggling student in highschool but with the right methods I eventually managed to make…

I believe that a maths tutor should not just provide answers to a problem, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them how to think to solve problems. This is why teaching maths or physics should go beyond drilling procedures, formulas and theorems into a student's head - tutors should encourage students to develop a…

I think an important thing for a maths tutor is to not tell the student the answer but help them learn how to achieve the answer themselves. Incorporating coaching into tutoring allows the student to learn how to do it independently when the tutor is not around. I am very patient with children and I like to come up with different activities so…

I think the most important things a maths tutor can do for a student, besides clarifying concepts, is to build their confidence and encourage critical thinking. From my short informal tutoring experience, I found that students can sometimes hyperfocus on guidelines/given examples, so much so that they believe there is no alternate approach to the…

I think apart from seeing results, it is the tutor's responsibility to foster a student's love of learning and love for a subject since learning is one of the most rewarding experiences in life. I believe it is also pivotal that a maths tutor guides understanding rather than forces it. That is, it is the role of the tutor to not only teach a…

From what I have been taught from my previous teacher, I believe that the most important thing for a maths tutor is their professional job ethnics. Help them improve their grades. I think throughout this process, you want them to understand what they're doing. Make sure they understand the concepts behind math formulas and such. However, ultimately I believe the most important thing is to see that being transferred and applied on grades and seeing evidence of improvement. I have…

I think respect is very important. When the students ask questions, the tutor should help students understand and think from the perspective of the them, rather than belittle them. My advantage is that I grew up in a Chinese-style education system where math is very important to Chinese people and we have a lot of unique tricks for learning math,…

Often times I've found that a lot of students struggle with certain parts in learning but don't speak up about them because of being afraid. In light of this, I believe the most important things a maths tutor can do is be the more proactive party in this situation - which should go without saying. Observing your student and noting down what…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to encourage them to be self-sufficient - I'm a firm believer that anybody can study by themselves, and that tutors are there to help the student bounce ideas off and help break down hard to digest pieces of education. Tailoring the lessons to suit the learning needs of the student. I am passionate about mathematics, and students can see that I care about helping them. Tutors should be able to aid students with all problems, without simply giving them the answer. The ability to problem-solve, as well as help the student find solutions is much, much more important than simply answering questions. I come from a very large family, which I believe has enhanced my skills of collaboration and teamwork which are vital…

Inside WaterlooTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Elliott revised multiplication and division, then built confidence with fractions and long division using visual models.

For Year 8, Sophie worked on algebraic expansion and simplification alongside measurement skills, focusing on area and perimeter of different shapes.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Adam tackled trigonometry topics including sine and cosine rules as well as curve sketching, helping to prepare for upcoming exams.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3 English, one student struggled with formatting sentences and showed a reluctance toward narrative writing; as the tutor noted, "needed help with formatting sentences."

Meanwhile, in Year 9 mathematics, untidy written work made solutions difficult to follow—messy handwriting directly led to lost marks when misread answers were submitted.

For a senior (Year 11) maths student, late submission of their formula sheet caused stress before an assessment: "Didn't give me cheat (Formula) sheet for the school in time."

These process habits interrupted feedback and sometimes meant unnecessary mistakes went unnoticed until revision.

Recent Achievements

One Waterloo tutor recently noticed a Year 7 student who used to rush through maths questions is now slowing down, carefully reading each problem and explaining his thinking out loud—a big shift from guessing in silence.

A Year 11 student who once struggled with probability is now consistently answering intersection problems and addition rule problems correctly, even tackling harder examples on his own.

Meanwhile, a primary schooler who previously needed help for every division step managed to complete her long division worksheet independently and finished all practice test questions without prompting.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

It's my first time ever tutoring primary school and high school students formally. I admit I was quite nervous at the beginning and I thought the parents would have been highly demanding. I found that the parents are extremely cooperative and the whole work environment is very flexible. I devolped my Communication skills, especially with younger kids and their parents. I believe in this era, face-to-face conversation is overlooked by many thanks to the advanced technologies but the tutoring experience strengthen my belief that face-to-face communication is still the best way to communicate and share ideas.

Things have been fantastic, Anisa is such a help and we are so happy with her. Christian is going very well, we are so glad we found you guys.

Thank you to Ezy Math Tutoring for providing an excellent service and an excellent tutor. My child needed support in VCE English and History. I contacted Ezy Math Tutoring after researching tutoring services on the Internet. The tutor organised brilliant lessons. She encouraged and supported my child through her final year of secondary school. As a result, my child got an ATAR score needed for the course she wanted to do and will be attending her preferred university.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Waterloo Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Primary School.
