The tutor can guide the student when they are facing difficulties. It is not the tutor's job to answer questions for the student, but rather to help the student make sense of how to solve a problem. I have a background in mathematics, both in my undergrad and as my Masters. I have experience answering questions in Course Hero, where I have an 80%…

I think it is extremely important for a maths tutor to be adaptable. Different students have differing learning styles and needs, and therefore, to help different students, you need to be able to tailor your tutoring to individualised approaches. Furthermore, rather than just giving the children the answers, as a tutor it is important to be able…

I believe a maths tutor should personalise their tutoring to the student and that means adapting to a student’s personality, pace, and learning style so as to maximise their learning potential. Ideally, a student comes away from a lesson feeling more curious about their subject, or at least feeling closer to being able to accomplish their goals…

The most important things a maths tutor can do for the student is listening to their questions and ensuring every explanation is understood. This ensures that the child not only acquires new knowledge but can apply it to their homework and grow as a student in maths. Also, a tutor must actively grow their methods of teaching, not using one…

I think maintaining an open mind, patience, flexibility, and a positive attitude are among the most important things a maths tutor can do. The most important thing a maths tutor can do is to not give up on the student. While it is rewarding when students improve, some can take a while before they can overcome their learning curve. It is important to be patient and work together as a team to help them achieve better results. I try to think outside the box and tailor my lessons to the…

Build their confidence. Every student is different. One cannot treat them on the same plain. Some are aware of their shortcomings and are just confused. Some are hardworking while others can be smart-workers or differently remarked. A tutor must recognise that talent in them and help them use it in growing. Explaining instances metaphorically…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do is to provide an interesting learning experience for the student such that they are motivated towards studying. Believing in students is one of the crucial aspects for being a tutor. The student needs someone to believe in them to succeed in their subjects, even if they themselves do not do so. Patience and firmness go hand in hand, so that the tutor is able to ensure the students cultivates discipline when learning, but also that they enjoy the process. As…

Inside WatsoniaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student worked through chapter four on complex numbers and tackled vectors from chapter two, focusing on problem-solving with worked examples.

For Year 11, time was spent reviewing logs, exponents, and compound interest calculations, clarifying methods step-by-step.

A Year 6 student practised multiplying decimals using exponents and reinforced understanding of the 3x and 5x tables through targeted exercises.

Recent Challenges

Several process-related challenges emerged across different year levels.

In Year 11, a student tackling advanced algebra needs to slow down and write out each equation, as skipping steps in quadratic proofs led to hidden errors.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student struggled with work layout—her method for factorizing was hard for others to follow, making it tough to trace calculation paths.

For a Year 7 learner, not keeping diagrams bold and clear meant key features were missed when drawing geometric figures.

In upper primary, times tables revision often focused only on easier sets, so gaps remained with the 6x and 7x tables.

Recent Achievements

One Watsonia tutor recently saw a Year 12 student finally grasp de Moivre's theorem, confidently using it to multiply and divide complex numbers—something that had caused hesitation before.

In another session, a Year 10 student who used to rely on the tutor for every step with Pythagoras' Theorem is now solving problems independently and even checking their own work for errors.

Meanwhile, a younger student surprised their tutor by breaking down an irregular area question into parts without prompting, after previously struggling to start these on their own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Watsonia Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Watsonia Primary School.
