A tutors time is the most important thing for a student. If a student requires some extra attention due to doubts it is the duty of the tutor to provide him/her with the extra time and support. As a tutor I feel it is very important to understand as to how the student is taking in the content. Is the content interesting for the student or is it…

As a tutor, it is your obligation to teach in a way that your pupil develops a passion for the topic he is learning. There is nothing worst than somebody who is bored while learning. Focusing on deeply understanding and on practical application is key to awaken a desire to continue learning. "If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't…

A tutor should be patient, encouraging, and adaptable, while also helping students develop good study habits and independent learning skills so they…

A tutor must be patient and understanding. Every child has their own way of learning. Therefore, a tutor must distinguish the students way of absorbing techniques and information, and implement these strategies for further sessions. A tutor must be able to relate to their students. More often than not a student may not understand a task first…

I think simply put a tutor should give a student confidence that they can learn anything that is presented to them. It might take a different approach than they initially thought of but my job is to show them these different approaches. I am aware that it is sometimes extremely difficult to understand information when it is presented in only one…

To me, the most essential role a tutor can fulfill is that of an enabler and empowerer. I believe a tutor's primary goal should be to provide students with a strong foundation of knowledge and a resilient problem-solving framework, not only to tackle academic challenges but also to navigate any obstacle life may present. An empowering tutor equips…

Encouraging them and reminding them that their school marks are not what entirely defines them as a good student. In my opinion, it is of utmost importance that tutor could make student love and curious about the subject as it will encourage self-study later on. The tutor should be reliable, and help them unleash their potential. Students should learn that they are able to do things on their own, hence a tutor should also be encouraging. Inside Watsons BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Michael revised algebra questions in preparation for an upcoming test and practiced solving equations involving both x and y.

For Year 9, Sasha focused on ratios and rates by reviewing her topic test and term exam paper, identifying areas to improve before finals.

Meanwhile, Roy in Year 10 worked through a holiday homework booklet covering algebraic techniques and coordinate geometry to consolidate his understanding ahead of the new term.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9, one student's algebra progress was limited by messy written work; as a tutor observed, "needs to get used to setting out work properly—linear equations in most cases will need to be solved on paper rather than just mentally."

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student preparing for exams struggled with time management and did not consistently check their answers under timed conditions, which led to repeated minor errors.

In Year 6 maths sessions, incomplete working made it hard for the tutor to identify where confusion began when dividing fractions. In those moments, confidence dropped and valuable learning opportunities slipped past.

Recent Achievements

During a recent Watsons Bay tutoring session, Roy, a high school student, confidently tackled algebra problems he'd struggled with at the start—he revisited those same questions and solved them independently this time.

Another tutor noted that Sasha, also in high school, now actively identifies her own mistakes and is keen to fix them during sessions, a shift from earlier weeks when she was hesitant to speak up about errors.

Meanwhile, Zane in Year 3 has shown a big change in attitude: instead of getting discouraged by wrong answers, he keeps trying until he gets it right.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Watsons Bay Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Vaucluse Public School.
