The most important thing a tutor can do is build confidence as well as knowledge. When students believe in themselves, they naturally try harder and keep improving. I focus on making learning simple and less intimidating, encouraging curiosity and problem-solving instead of just memorisation, and being supportive so that students know someone…

The most important thing a tutor can do is spark curiosity—once a student is curious, learning becomes easier and more enjoyable. My role is to guide, support, and give them the confidence to keep exploring. My strengths are patience, breaking things into simple steps, and making students feel comfortable asking questions. I also grasp math…

A tutor should always understand the level of understanding of a particular subject by a student, so that he/she can start teaching from the basics if necessary. I am people-friendly. I know English, Tamil, Chinese, and German, so I can speak in a way students can understand the topics clearly. Also, I am strong in my fundamentals, so I can teach…

Mental support Always be active to answer questions (even in off work periods of the day) Make a good plan of what the session will be all about before it starts. Openmind at work ... Try different methods and examples to communicate the concepts. Let the student work the problems on their own and then try to guide them to the answers without…

The tutor should have the knowledge of what they are teaching, as that would not cause any hindrance while the child is in the learning phase. The tutor should also be kind and attentive towards the children. I am very comfortable around children, and I tend to make them comfortable too. I also like to play with certain tips and tricks so that…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence in being able to attempt completely unfamiliar problems. This demonstrates the foundation of their basics and will take them a long way regardless of their chosen field. I generally try to explain concepts with various analogies instead of just showing the proper…

I think a tutor has to be such kind of person who can unwillingly be able to establish himself/ herself as a role model to follow which will guarantee the success of the the student in the future. Having empathy, because not all content comes too easy for students as it does for us, obviously. Having patience, because it can be frustrating if a tutor just expects a student to "get it" immediately. Being kind. This seems obvious but you may be surprised the number of teachers I've had and met who are not kind, and they are extremely hard…

Developing a close relationship with students is essential in creating trust with a student. This allows a student to listen and follow your guidance. As a tutor, the most important thing to do is ensure the student is confident with their taught content. This is achieved initially by committing to your students work along-side them. Following…

Not give the answers but help support the learning process and give guidance when the child needs it most. There is a difference between doing all the work for the child and actually teaching how the problem can be approached and observing how the student does it him/herself. To work with a happy and motivated student allows to improve and learn in a better way. That's why a good feeling with the child is very important. Zoe Banks, Waverton

Inside WavertonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Charlie worked on logic and probability through challenging homework word problems, along with number patterns and the addition and subtraction of negative numbers.

In Year 9, Emily focused on revising linear algebra concepts using practice assignments and explored key ideas in networks by interpreting diagrams.

For Year 10, Alex completed trigonometry revision—especially sine rule applications—and tackled a financial mathematics review to consolidate understanding of percentages in real-world contexts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student approached logarithms and exponentials confidently, but avoided writing full working—"explaining his working out will help him better understand concepts," a tutor noted—making it harder to catch misconceptions early.

In Year 9 algebra revision, one student only tackled easy problems set by the teacher, so weak spots in graphing and congruency proofs went unaddressed before tests.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner hesitated to admit confusion during new linear topics, sometimes just nodding along rather than asking questions; this led to gaps that later slowed progress when more complex problems appeared.

Recent Achievements

One Waverton tutor noticed a real shift with a Year 10 student who used to freeze up on worded maths problems—this week, he started talking through each step out loud and grouped terms confidently on his own.

A Year 11 student tackled revision questions in geometry and even requested extra practice in an area she previously avoided, showing new initiative during her session.

In Year 6 English, a quieter student began asking clarifying questions about literary techniques instead of guessing, which hadn't happened before—she finished by explaining metaphor examples back unprompted.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stanton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like SHORE - Sydney Church of England Preparatory School, North Sydney.
