Motivate / Inspire - Without motivation, even brilliant students don't succeed. I was always a bright student but I was never motivated to do more until I met this chemistry teacher in my 11th grade. He not only inspired us, he taught different ways to approach studying and learning, he helped us choose a career path that would best suit us and…

A tutor should also make learning enjoyable and cultivate interest in the subject to ensure the student enjoys the process and develop a good relationship with…

1. Simplify and relate lessons to real life scenarios. 2. Tutors must have the ability to inspire the students and make them like the subject. 3. Along with the lessons tutors must build an authentic relationship with students. The more students become comfortable; it is easier for tutors to impart the concepts. 4. Tutor's must adapt to…

A tutor is more than just one that imparts knowledge. Any textbook, podcast or Youtube Video can do that. The power of a good tutor is in his or her ability to strengthen and encourage their students, so helping them gain some momentum to keep persevering in subjects that are challenging them. This means patiently helping the students understand…

Listen to a student from the heart, lead and help a student to establish confidence of the subject. Teach the basic logic, the idea that comes from, and how can a student solve a question instead of simply tell a student what to do next. Treat different students differently, develop the most suitable methodology for each student to…

To me, the most important thing as a tutor is to listen. Students sometimes find it difficult to express their struggles so being patient is very important when understanding how to best help a student. The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to impart values and lessons not only limited to the school syllabus, but those that impart a general, holistic all-round development of the student. My strength as a tutor is to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the student, and accordingly guide them empathetically through…

So i belive being patient with students and allowing them to feel comfortable and learn at their own pace is the best thing a tutor can do for their student. Comprehensive understanding of the subject. I am…

I think its their ability to motivate students is very important, by giving them a different perspective. Everyone has a unique learning technique, and finding out a student's unique learning process is the most important thing a tutor can do. This way, tutors can help the students in a much more efficient way, that also makes learning more enjoyable for the student. Tailored sessions make the process more entertaining and more useful. For me, as a student, what I sought from my tutor was discovering how I learn best, rather than adhering to a one-size-fits-all approach. I also valued having someone with whom I could freely share my thoughts without fear of judgment, essentially a friend. Magali, West Leederville

Inside West LeedervilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ava focused on converting between decimals and fractions as well as practising division with decimals.

Year 10 student Lewis worked through practical applications of quadratics, creating a page of summary notes to prepare for his exam.

For Year 12, Emily tackled calculus skills such as maximising and minimising functions using differentiation, along with kinematics problems involving motion graphs.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, one student often skipped drawing diagrams for trigonometry questions, which made it harder to spot angle domains and led to repeated errors.

During a Year 10 test, forgetting to keep track of units meant extra time was spent correcting conversions rather than moving forward with the main problems.

A senior (Year 12) learner "missed feedback from earlier attempts," as a tutor noted, resulting in the same algebraic sign mistakes showing up again when working through quadratic factorisation.

In each case, small process gaps snowballed—turning manageable tasks into lingering hurdles.

Recent Achievements

One West Leederville tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who had struggled to connect graphs and equations—now, he's confidently drawing linear and piecewise graphs from their equations and can also work backwards, deriving equations from the graphs.

A Year 9 student who used to mix up mean, median, mode, and range is now able to find each one correctly in different data sets without hesitation.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 5 began asking for help when adding or subtracting negative numbers instead of guessing, especially after working through the ladder analogy together.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Subiaco Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like West Leederville Primary School.
