I personally believe that for a tutor to be effective, they have to be willing to listen to, and learn from, the individual that they are working with. There is always more than one way to teach a specific skill, and, as a result of this, it is important to work together to find the most effective methods. I think that it is important to foster an…

Make a student feel comfortable with their learning process, transmit reliability and proximity at the same time, pay attention to every detail that could be asked or not solved. I consider that the emotional aspect has to be addressed in order to strengthen a better understanding and a more solid knowledge. Patience, rigor, implication and…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to engage the student in a way which makes them want to keep learning that specific subject if not fall in love with it. At the end of the day motivation must come from the student themself and as a tutor I believe it is my job to help the student find that motivation. I believe my…

I believe that the most important thing for a tutor is to form a positive relationship which helps to push the student further than they believed they possibly could before. I believe that my strengths as a tutor will be to see where a student is struggling. From here I will be able to further help them by ensuring that they full understand the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help the student progress in their learning by making learning easier and enjoyable, this is where building a relationship and having step by step instructions based on the learner's needs is important. When a student learns the skills and tools required to solve a problem, they become…

Inside WestcourtTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Sophia focused on simplifying index laws and evaluating order of operations, including practice with decimals from her recent school test.

Year 8 Layla worked through exam revision by applying Pythagoras' theorem to solve right-angled triangle problems and tackling worded questions involving rates and percentages.

For Year 9, Will's sessions concentrated on full content revision for upcoming exams, reviewing algebraic techniques and methods for solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination approaches.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student often arrived without all required materials, once needing to redo a lost homework sheet instead of progressing ("lost previous homework sheet so had to spend lesson going through it again").

In Year 10, another student's note-taking was patchy and pattern recognition strategies were not clearly set out, making recall during algebra revision more difficult.

A senior student in Years 11–12 did not complete assigned homework across multiple weeks; this led to missed practice with BODMAS and sign rules, and mistakes repeated on new problems. During one session, the consequence was that time intended for learning new skills was spent fixing old errors.

Recent Achievements

One Westcourt tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to rely on prompts; she arrived with her own study materials and specific questions for test prep, showing much more independence than before.

In Year 8, another student who struggled with angles last term is now solving harder problems solo and even recalling the sum of internal angles without help.

Meanwhile, a younger student made real progress by not just practicing fractions but applying those skills to trickier problems right away—something he hesitated to try at first.
