Tutoring allows for more direct communication, which means I can adjust explanations for better understanding and potentially spark interest and understanding in the subject I have two siblings in high school, and helping them with their…

I would consider the most important thing a tutor could do, would be to teach their student more than they knew to begin with. It's a very simple statement, but it gets to the heart of the matter I feel. All the methods a tutor uses should be geared towards helping the student learn something, and have them understand and remember what they've…

The most important thing a tutor can do is teach students *how* to learn. By helping them develop strategies and habits that build confidence in their own abilities, we give them the tools to succeed independently - beyond our own sessions. It's about long term growth over short term fixes. One of my strengths is clear communication - both in…

The most important thing I can do for a student is fill in the gaps that the teacher can't. Teachers aren't able to modify the way they teach for every individual student, as a tutor I can do that. I am good at helping people understand concepts that are difficult to understand. I love learning and like to share my enthusiasm with other people.…

A tutor can make a student love the subject he/she hates. The most important thing for a tutor is to understand the student, his/her interests, aptitude, and what he/she is inclined towards. If you have a basic idea of the student mindset you can develop techniques to make them understand the subject in a way they don't find it hard. Gamification…

I believe it’s to help them build a habit of studying and to make them grow their interest in learning. By encouraging the students and providing them with an appropriate levels of challenges , the student can become more engaged with the subject. The teacher should provide the students with an appropriate level of challenges that the students…

The best thing a tutor can do is leave a student with the tools, knowledge and confidence to continue advancing their academic career without relying on the tutor or teachers. I'm quite smart but also good at talking and listening to people. I see one of my strengths as being able to articulate an idea in a simple way, especially with Economics,…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is obviously helping them in their studies, both in terms of improving their grades, but also their critical thinking skills for future learning. I think the key with this in a tutoring context, rather than classroom teaching, is catering to a student’s needs, and making sure that…

More important than the content is the environment a tutor can create. By reciting the book's content, I might be able to help the student pass their grade. However, by making the student get good at learning and understanding abstract concepts, one makes them capable of tackling any subject. This is the most importat thing a tutor can do for a…

Listening to their questions, as many children are too scared to ask questions in class, and I hope to provide them a safe space for this. I also think it's important to be flexible, to work with what the kids need. Patience and an emphatic approach to teaching are essential for a tutor. Students may lack confidence, be overwhelmed with material, and be stressed. Therefore, it's important to be considerate and patient. This approach can also help understand students' misconceptions and errors by being patient, and listening to students can reveal what areas…

Inside Weston CreekTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Emily worked on factorising and expanding quadratics, as well as exploring volume calculations for prisms and cylinders using diagrams.

In Year 10, Jack focused on graphing and manipulating parabolas, followed by revision of laws of indices and solving exponential equations.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sophie practiced differentiation from first principles and then applied this to finding rates of change between two points on a curve.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 maths, a student relied on their calculator for basic multiplication and square roots—"requires calculator for simple multiplying (x3 etc.)," noted the tutor—which slowed them down in test settings.

A Year 12 student spent too much time on questions they felt less confident about during exams, leading to unfinished sections despite knowing some answers.

In Year 9, another skipped writing out steps for algebra problems; as observed, this made it difficult to spot sign errors later.

Meanwhile, one Year 6 student forgot to bring required materials for their composition draft and needed reminders from peers just to start.

Recent Achievements

A Weston Creek tutor noticed some real progress with high school students recently. Sami, a Year 10 student who previously relied heavily on worked examples, started creating his own modified questions to practise parabolas and now independently works through problems until he gets one right for each type.

Rory, in Year 11 English, shifted from struggling to draft essays to writing productively for nearly an hour straight and received specific positive feedback from his teacher that his presentation covered all requirements.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who used to hesitate when faced with new maths content is now able to complete sets of questions after only a brief explanation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Woden Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Orana Steiner School.
