Tutors fill a different role than teachers and parents, and that puts them in a unique position to support students. Personal relationships are foundational to student success -- the more connected a student feels to his or her tutor, the more the tutor creates trust and respect, essential ingredients for students to learn well. When a chemistry…

Good communication. Being able to properly connect with the student is important in building trust so that the student is open and honest about their ability and will ask questions when they don't understand new or existing concepts. I am a slow methodical thinker. When it comes to tutoring, I like to break things down simply and start with the…

I consider working on the clarity of concept as the most important thing. The concept once built, can be polished by recalling it several times when solving directly or indirectly related problems. Inside Wiley ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Olivia focused on identifying and simplifying ratios, as well as writing equivalent ratios using practical examples.

In Year 8, Noah worked through scale drawings by applying unit conversions for length and distance in worded problems.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Sarah reviewed half-yearly exam topics such as operations with fractions, decimals, and percentages, including their application to financial questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly left working out incomplete, especially units in ratio and geometry questions, leading to lost marks—"she needs to develop the habit of writing FULL working out, including all units," as one tutor observed.

In a Year 9 algebra session, she relied heavily on calculators for fraction and percentage conversions instead of practicing by hand, which slowed her confidence with mixed exam questions.

During primary revision, a student skipped over worded multiplication problems without breaking them down into steps or checking their layout; this made it hard to spot mistakes before moving on.

In high school sessions, not creating summary notes or revisiting foundational skills before exams meant she guessed answers under pressure and forgot key processes after breaks.

Recent Achievements

A Wiley Park tutor noticed a big shift in one high school student's approach to assessments—after usually waiting until the last minute, she began working on her logbook and portfolio the same day they were assigned, bringing creative ideas to her project.

Another high schooler who previously hesitated with "hard" ratio problems now completes similar questions independently after just a brief explanation.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to struggle when subtracting smaller numbers from larger ones is now confidently using borrowing without prompting, finishing subtraction exercises with no errors.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

I just wanted to express my thanks to you and my son's tutor Sam. With his assistance Grady improved his maths results from virtually failing the subject to achieving a very respectable B + for his end of year  11 final grade. Sam was personable and patient, encouraging and motivating. Even though my son has decided not to continue studying maths in year  12 , I am delighted with the results he was able to achieve ,and the confidence and self- belief he attained. Please pass these comments on to Sam. Again, thank you so much.

All good so far, both Will and I are very happy with Ben. He is good value. Highly recommend him.

Our tutor is Anthony. We have found his interaction with our son Benn has proven very rewarding. Benn has taken to Anthony and sees him as a mentor as well as a tutor. He has only praise and admiration for Anthony. At our discussions with Benn  after each tutorial Benn has a renewed interest and passion for Math. Anthony and Benn seem to have similar interests in physics and sciences which I think helps. He is also providing and encouraging Benn with his confidence not just in math but in all things. I would like to offer our satisfaction and praise in Anthony's professionalism and he is a testimonial to your business

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lakemba Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Lakemba Public School.
