The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to kindle in them a curiosity for the world around them and to guide them in looking for answers. I do not believe in the teach-to-test approach. Instead, I believe that teaching should not be compared to filling a bottle with water but rather to helping a flower grow in its own way. As…

1. Convey to the student that if they are finding a subject hard, it is natural. They just haven't found a way that works for them and we are willing to explore that 2. A tutor should understand their student's potential and work accordingly and find ways of teaching that work for them 3. Be patient with a student and have empathy and give them…

I consider developing their ways of thinking towards a point that they can lead themselves, linking reality problems with the teaching materials, listening to their needs and guiding students to know their future opportunities are the most important things a tutor can do. After the first months of tutoring passed by I noticed that what most students necessitate was a method, a fixed pattern to follow whilst studying. Then, my objective became to teach students how to learn properly: my aim was to assist them in finding their own way of studying and learning. As the result of five years of University study, I have…

A good tutor needs to know the content, but more importantly, they need to identify gaps in the student's understanding, even when the students aren't sure where they're struggling. As their tutor, I will ask some surface level questions on different parts of the topics to gauge their understanding. I would consider myself a patient type of…

In my opinion, the most important thing for a tutor is not to teach the subject material in a study session, but to be able to help the student improve his understanding capability so the student can do topics on his own. In my experience, if I was able to help understand some topic to a student, it felt good. But it felt even better, when the…

The best thing a teacher can do to a student is to adapt to student's learning style. I have experienced that every student learn differently, some are visual, some hands-on discussion based and some with stories. A great tutor identifies how each student learns fast and adjust their approach accordingly. I have emotional intelligence to learn…

A tutor can change the approach of a student towards a subject- from pessimism to optimism, and make him/her excel in that subject. Understanding- so if a topic is not well understood by the student, I can explain again with a different approach so that the student understands the concept clearly. Patience- I am patient with weak/slow learners,…

Provide the student with confidence in their own learning ability. I think the most important things a tutor can do are to build the student’s confidence, make learning less stressful, and explain things in a way that actually makes sense to them. It’s also important to be patient, encouraging, and flexible, every student learns differently, so a tutor should be able to adapt to their needs and help them feel…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is identify each student's individuality and therefore handle them uniquely, with utmost care and understanding. The most important thing for a tutor is to be an individual that students can openly and freely talk to other than being able to give knowledge. The willingness to help and to commit time, energy, and patience. If the tutor is doing for the sake of doing, it shows the lack of commitment. I truly believe that teaching is a passion-driven job. Inside WilliamstownTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Emily focused on adding and subtracting fractions and worked through worded questions involving long division to strengthen calculation skills.

Year 8 student Liam practiced expanding brackets in algebra and solved problems involving linear relations, including plotting points on Cartesian planes.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Olivia tackled quadratic equations and explored index laws, using example problems to reinforce her understanding of powers and roots.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, a student relied heavily on calculators for matrix and network problems; as one tutor observed, "it would be worth revising how to calculate matrix problems by hand."

In Year 8, written work was often disorganized—answers weren't lined up when working with decimals, making it hard to track mistakes.

During a Year 5 session, a student repeatedly erased and rewrote answers rather than showing working steps, which made it tough to check reasoning or catch errors.

For a Year 9 learner, skipping notation and not simplifying fractions meant correct answers took longer to verify during revision.

Recent Achievements

A Williamstown tutor recently noticed Eddison, a high school student, becoming much more independent in his problem-solving—he now shows all his working out when expanding brackets and grouping like terms, which is a big change from when he'd rush to answers without explaining steps.

Chelsea, also in high school, has started using factor trees to break numbers into prime factors on her own and can clearly explain the difference between index and expanded form—a real leap from needing prompts last term.

In Year 5 maths, Genevieve finally clicked with the concept of area by reasoning through why side lengths are multiplied; she then solved several worded problems involving area without hesitation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Williamstown Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Williamstown North Primary School.
