The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is getting to know and understand each specific student in depth. As every person learns differently, it's important for tutors to understand their individual students because this what separates a tutor from a teacher, the personalized teaching style. One of my strengths as a tutor is my…

In my experience, the most important things a tutor can do are build a strong relationship with the student, assess their learning style, and foster a love of learning. By creating a positive and supportive environment, students feel comfortable asking questions and taking risks. Tailoring lessons to how a student best absorbs information keeps…

It is most important to provide a comfortable space for students to make errors and learn, while also providing the motivation and space for studying to be completed. I focus on relatability but have also completed my QCE with relatively good grades and understand high school content. On top of this I have limited energy for tomfoolery, while…

I believe that a tutor should be friendly with the student so that the student can freely discuss the problems with his/her tutor. The tutor can use interesting techniques to describe the concepts which will increase the concentration of the student and also his/her eagerness to learn. Again asking the student questions about the topic can help…

The most important things a tutor can do is knowing the right way to support and motivate the student to grow academically. A tutor should also have a strong understanding of the subject so they can break lessons or problems into simpler terms, while still making the class fun and interactive. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is guide a student. Just watering is not enough but should help the students to grow his roots so that the student grasps the concepts not just answer some previously seen examples. I like to teach students in a way that is interactive and not directive.I feel that the more students learn about the…

In my opinion, making the student feel comfortable is key to establishing a healthy and optimistic relationship with learning. The teaching space needs to be free of judgement and should feel inclusive. A one-size-fits-all method of teaching disregards every student's unique circumstances so the tutor should make an active effort to empathise with…

I believe that each student should be heard in the classroom and encouraged to contribute to discussions. It is important for them to engage in active learning rather than just listening to a teacher speak passively. I find that I can relate to students on a personal level and connect with them through pop culture and references, strengthening…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make them feel comfortable and inculcate a 'can do' attitude. Make sure that they understand that if they put their mind to it, anything is possible and go along with them on that journey. I'm a 21yr old post graduate student. This puts me in roughly the same generation as the students. I…

The most important thing apart from helping the student understand that they can solve things on their own, is teaching the student how to study the subject. Help improve their self-confidence and self-reliance through introducing tools that will help the student foster healthy and effective study habits of their own. The two most important things would be to clear the basics of the subject and to keep the student interested in it. Most of the students develop phobia of maths or stop being interested in the subject because they do not understand the basics. This in turn, leads them to not focus on the subject even if they are capable of doing good in it or they…

I think I huge part of it is often confidence. I have found most students already understand and are able to do the work however they don’t have the confidence to back themselves. Vesna, Newport

Inside Williamstown NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Sophia focused on algebraic expansion and factorisation, as well as solving equations using substitution.

Year 10 student Marcus worked through sketching straight line graphs and determining x- and y-intercepts from equations.

For Year 11, Emily tackled differentiation basics and applied these skills to maximum and minimum problems using worked examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Methods, a student was asked to finish all questions and send them by email, but the work remained incomplete—meaning gaps in problem-solving practice before assessments.

Another student in Year 8, as noted, "needs to do more problems about factorization," yet homework tasks weren't consistently finished or reviewed.

In Year 12 Specialist Maths, reliance on calculators surfaced: one lesson flagged that matrix calculations should be revised by hand to truly grasp underlying methods. These moments meant missed chances for feedback and left key skills underdeveloped ahead of major exams.

Recent Achievements

One Williamstown North tutor noticed a Year 11 student who had struggled with graphing trigonometric functions now confidently tackling both sine and cosine graphs, even volunteering to try tangent graphs without prompting.

Another high schooler, previously hesitant to ask for help, took the initiative this week to explain which parts of her homework she didn't understand—then worked through those sections until she could solve similar problems independently.

Meanwhile, in Year 4 maths, a student who once rushed through answers has started checking his calculations carefully and finished all ten workbook questions with no mistakes.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Newport Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Australian Islamic Centre College.
