Other than imparting the lessons in school, I think being able to empathize with the students is key in effective teaching. As a matter of strategy, what I will do is to meet them where they are academically, then prepare a plan and implement it to be able to meet our goal(s). I have the ability to relate with young kids well. Raising three…

The primary contributor to a student's poor academic performance isn't the lack of knowledge but the fear of failure. As a tutor, it is my responsibility to help my students in tackling these challenges. I believe that a tutor's role is crucial in creating a learning space where doubts and curiosity are welcome. I can guide them in…

A tutor needs to be patient when tutoring a student especially in subjects like mathematics and physics since those subjects require the most assumed knowledge in high school than any other subject, students normally have trouble recollecting previous works. Firstly, I believe in one will learn the best when one is willing and self motivated to learn, hence building up students’ interest to the material is an essential strategy of being a tutor. Secondly, as a tutor, it is important to know the materials by heart. Lastly, communication is the key of being a good tutor, given all students have…

Based on my experience, asking students to explain to you the whole concept has been the most important thing as it ensures the tutor about the understanding student has got. I break down the concepts into smaller - easily understandable chunks of information. This 'dumbing down the information' makes it easier for the students to grab the…

In my view, a tutor's primary role is to not just convey information, but to inspire and guide students to become independent learners. This involves creating a supportive and encouraging atmosphere where students feel safe to explore their questions and make mistakes. A tutor should also identify a student's individual strengths and weaknesses…

Inside Windsor GardensTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Ashton worked on DNA structure, replication, and mitosis in preparation for a biology test.

For Year 10, Emily focused on graphing quadratics and completed worksheets covering arithmetic skills alongside quadratic factorisation practice.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Tom revised expanding brackets and tackled problems involving factorising algebraic expressions, using step-by-step examples to reinforce understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 algebra, skipping steps when expanding or factoring quadratics led to confusion—"as the tutor noted, she left out working, which made sign errors harder to spot."

In Year 8 English essay writing, a student arrived without their novel, so evidence for analysis had to be guessed instead of quoted.

For a Year 4 learner, incomplete homework on basic sentence construction and phonics meant foundational spelling and reading skills lagged behind.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 biology student depended heavily on PowerPoint slides rather than using flashcards for active recall; this left key terms unretained during revision sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Windsor Gardens tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to avoid essay planning now drawing clear links between ideas and providing much more detailed evidence in their SACE English assignments.

In maths, a Year 8 learner who previously struggled with converting denominators started applying the correct rules independently after practising methods for double negatives—showing genuine improvement in both understanding and self-reliance.

Meanwhile, a younger student has begun using visual story maps to plan imaginative narratives and is now referring back to her own drawings when writing conclusions, something she hadn't tried before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Greenacres Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Avenues College.
