Where a classroom environment may not fully satisfy the student's individual needs and accomodate their personal learning style, a tutor can offer tailored support that more effectively addresses their gaps in understanding. The tutor can: equip the student with strategies for solving problems on their own; promote critical thinking, teach…

Being respectful is one of the best ways to connect with a student, and allows students room to speak up about any issues they are having. Having good management skills will ensure students are taught with well prepared content, and also be heared with appropriate after class learning material to prepare for the next lesson. Very good…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is put himself in the student's shoes, analyse his situation and figure out his strengths and weaknesses and thus solve his queries by asking more questions and getting the answer out of the student himself rather than spoonfeeding him. As a tutor, I have a ton of strengths. I would list a few…

Inspire them. Anyone can regurgitate textbook material in a different way. But only few can truly educate and inspire their students to become the very best version of themselves. Some of the strengths that I believe are quite necessary for a tutor other than leadership are resilience, and the ability to properly analyse a students learning…

Go at a pace in which the student feels comfortable, as going too quickly may be the reason they didn't understand it when their teachers taught them. Following this a tutor needs to have done some work on the subject before seeing the student as if the tutor doesn't understand what he/she is saying, the student has no chance. Also going through…

I think understanding is the most important skill for a tutor to possess. Explaining a topic is one thing, but doing so at a level that is useful for the student is another thing entirely. As a tutor, you need to be able to understand what it is that a student already understands, what it is they are struggling with, and why they are struggling.…

The best thing I can do is to generate interest of the student in that particular subject. That way, the student can get his own way at that subject later on. I can grasp the concept as quickly as possible and make the best and the easiest approach to teach the child. In mathematics, I excel in topics like Trigonometry, Calculus and general…

It's about creating a positive and encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. Furthermore, setting achievable goals and nurturing a passion for learning are also…

I believe the most important goal for a tutor is to give their students the tools they need to succeed. Tutoring is not only giving test answers, but rather, providing the tools and insight each an every person needs to overcome their unique challenges. I don't force my style of learning unto others. Instead, I try to recognize what each student…

Similar to my response to the last question, I believe a tutor exists to personalise the teaching experience. What this means is understanding exactly what it is the student that gets the student stuck on a certain topic. It may be the whole topic in general or it may be that one small concept is throwing them off, but the most important thing a…

Inside WishartTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Grace worked through simplifying algebraic fractions and practiced circumference and area calculations, also touching on unit conversions.

In Year 11, Amelia focused on graphs and networks problem sets from Unit 4, as well as finance topics like reducing balance loans and annuities using her textbook and class materials.

For Year 12 Mathematical Methods, Patrick set up a revision plan for upcoming exams, reviewing differentiation techniques such as chain, product, and quotient rules alongside sample exam questions in chemistry and physics.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, one student's over-reliance on calculator shortcuts meant errors in index laws and logarithmic functions went unchecked—"needed more practice identifying which formula to use," noted the tutor.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 assignment was delayed as the student struggled with structuring their PSMT report, leading to last-minute edits and confusion about required components.

For a Year 4 learner, messy written work in long division and two-digit multiplication made it hard to check answers or spot mistakes; as observed, "work needed on spelling and handwriting" directly impacted clarity.

In each case, these process habits created extra hurdles when tackling new material.

Recent Achievements

One Wishart tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who, after struggling to clarify her chemistry report's purpose, took the lead in restructuring paragraphs and articulating her own ideas clearly.

A Year 12 student recently showed real initiative by finishing comprehensive outlines independently for each section of their science report—something they'd hesitated with before.

Meanwhile, a younger learner in Year 3 now counts backwards from 10 unprompted and confidently sounds out tricky words instead of waiting for help. The session wrapped up with her reading out every number block unaided.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

I am very happy with Rachel. She is very professional and her and Samantha have developed a good working relationship. Samantha has expressed to me that Rachel explains things really well and now she is understanding concepts she hadn't previously.

As you say it is hard to gauge the impact this early, however they seem to have a few laughs and Steve has said Jack is a lot faster in his response time. So that's progress considering Jack's willingness to begin extra learning was very poor. It didn't take more than 2 lessons for that to change. To date we are happy and are glad we didn't leave it any later, as it it the beginning of term I'm sure i will be getting feedback from Jack's teacher through the term on his improvement.I look forward to that. We want him to enjoy all lessons not dread the thought of attending classes. So far so good, Steve seems like a great match.

I just wanted to let you know how very happy we are with Tianna's tutor, Josephine. Josephine is so bubbly, easy going, very patient and great at teaching Maths and making it fun to learn.   Tianna is quite taken with Josephine, has built a great rapport with her and has made huge progress with her algebra in the short while Josephine has been tutoring her. Josephine is definitely a great asset to your company and we are so happy she is Tianna's tutor

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mount Gravatt Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mansfield State High School.
