I consider that a tutor can impact a student's passion towards knowledge through his/ her personal enthusiasm for teaching. Another important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide studying strategies before…

Tutors must have a solid passion to teach, including taking time to understand different ways to teach or provide content, or developing their own skills to allow students to understand a subject. A tutor should aim to see improved results provided the student puts work in to improve. Seeing results can develop encouragement and self-fulfilment…

Genuinely understanding the students need and tailoring the best approach of teaching accordingly is the best thing a tutor can do. No students are same and have same level of intelligence and this should be considered by the teacher. As a tutor, my biggest strength is that i genuinely love teaching not just solving problems, but explaining deeply…

I think a teacher should continually assess teaching and solicit feedback from students so that he/she can adapt teaching style to their needs and increase effectiveness. As a teacher, I pushed my learning and understanding to a specific border where I came to the level of student understanding and been useful in clearing, giving and cementing…

As a tutor, my job is to help a learner achieve their academic goals and guide them through their academic struggles. It's truly rewarding when you can see how your efforts helped improve a learner's grade on a test or report. At the end of the day, all that matters is the smile on your learner's face as they express their pride in themselves. I…

Explain it several times if you have to. Let them have a go themselves. They need to be able to understand it not just memorise the work so they can do it on their own when you are not there. Patience. Listening to students to see where that it is they have trouble understanding. Trying to explain the situation in different ways by giving other…

Being supportive for a student no matter what the situation is. Creating a realistic goal and achievement for the student and working together to strive towards that. I think an important role tutor must be able to do is to be able to adaptable in their teaching style to cater to the needs of students. Encouraging independence is significant. Students should be introduced to strategies to be independent and more effective learners. It is that virtue that students bring back to their classroom ready to apply what they have learned during their tutor's session. Patience is a key value that I possess and that will make me succeed in this role. Acknowledging that different student…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are listening carefully, being patient and identifying that not all students are the same. I had a tutor in high school for my VCE studies. I learned that a tutor must be a supportive figure that guides their student with compassion and patience. Inside YagoonaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Tia focused on algebra, including expansion and factorisation, as well as probability using Venn diagrams and tree diagrams to support understanding.

For Year 9, Natalia revised equations and area concepts, then applied algebraic techniques through word problems.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Marcus practised converting between millimetres, centimetres, and kilometres for measurement tasks and worked on interpreting bar graphs and line graphs to build data literacy.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11, one student repeatedly skipped planning before writing scripts, preferring to "jump straight into the draft," which made structuring arguments difficult.

A Year 10 learner misplaced assigned worksheets and arrived without required homework—organization is a clear obstacle in this case.

For a Year 8 maths quiz, overconfidence led to missed marks; "he could easily have gotten more if he took the time to check his answers."

In primary years, forgetting rules for basic multiplication and measurement (Year 4) meant progress slowed even after reminders. These habits resulted in lost time re-explaining concepts or revisiting basics instead of moving forward.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Yagoona recently saw Joel, a Year 10 student, begin spotting and fixing his own run-on sentences—a shift from earlier sessions where he waited for corrections.

Sriyan, who's in high school, remembered and correctly applied the rule for adding unlike fractions without prompting this week, having previously needed reminders each time.

Meanwhile, Ellena (Year 4) surprised her tutor by voluntarily completing extra homework and finishing it ahead of schedule—she used to need lots of encouragement just to start on tasks.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Canterbury Bankstown Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Yagoona Public School.
