The most important thing that a tutor can do is to understand their students and modify their teaching according to their learning capacity. A tutor doesn't need to use fancy language - what matters is that they are able to educate their students - the basic concepts in the most simple way, so that they are able to connect it with their life and…

I believe a tutor can inspire a student to be a better human being. A tutor can inspire a student to think differently, to think out of the box, to be creative. The tutor can pass on knowledge and real world experience and insights. In other words a tutor can perfect a student. I think my first strength is that I am extremely patient. I can…

A tutor should be flexible and adaptable while setting realistic and achievable goals, and should provide motivation and support throughout the learning process. After completing my Bachelor's degree in Physics in 2020, I worked as an instructor and academic tutor at the Physics faculty of the University of Havana until 2022. This experience has…

The most important things a tutor can do are to be patient, provide clear explanations, and adapt teaching methods to suit the student’s learning style. A tutor should have different and interesting approaches to make the students understand the concepts thoroughly. Tutor should be friendly and always…

Build their confidence. Every student is different. One cannot treat them on the same plain. Some are aware of their shortcomings and are just confused. Some are hardworking while others can be smart-workers or differently remarked. A tutor must recognise that talent in them and help them use it in growing. Explaining instances metaphorically…

Being an inspirational character. A tutor has to encourage his/her students always. During a semester/course, there will be certain times when students will lose interests for a poor mark (may be), or a personal problem. A tutor can't force a student to complete a session because it has to! A friendly approach can be helpful sometimes as well.…

The Tutor should have a lot of patience while teaching children, as each child is different from one other. Tutor should understand each student's ability and talent and motivate them to do further in their own field. It should be the tutor's job to go to each student individually and ask if they are good with study materials and understanding…

Understanding the weak points and listening to their problems helps establish trust between the tutor and the student. This makes a tutor approachable. I think that a tutor should be able to meet the individual needs of a student and present the content in an easily understandable format for them especially in the field of mathematics where there are often multiple pathways to achieving an answer. Firstly, each tutor should present the rationale and the logic while explaining new concepts to students rather than make them memorize and automatically follow the rules or steps. Students should understand what they do and that is the responsibility of…

I think a tutor needs to be able to create that working relationship with a student, to show them how fun learning can be. When shown how interesting these things can be, students become much more motivated to engage and learn, and the 1-on-1 support that tutoring provides gives these children the tools they need to excel. I have 18 months of…

Inside YallambieTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Olivia focused on algebraic techniques using Chapter 4 of the Edrolo textbook and also worked through transposing between mixed and improper fractions.

Year 8 student Sam practised for an upcoming test on probability and statistical analysis, including real-world examples to consolidate understanding.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Zoe concentrated on Cartesian coordinates from Chapter 9 of the Edrolo textbook and explored applications by plotting points on coordinate grids.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student's incomplete homework is making it difficult to build on core algebra skills—"he will not progress any further in Mathematics unless he tends to his homework."

In Year 7, poor attention span led to missed steps when handling decimals and multiplication tables, with focus drifting mid-question.

For a senior student, as noted, "the complete disregard for time and lack of participation severely hampered the potential learning outcomes" during geometry revision.

Messy handwriting and reluctance to read or write have also slowed comprehension in upper primary lessons; requests for neater work are frequent before clarity improves.

Recent Achievements

One Yallambie tutor noticed a Year 10 student who, after initially struggling with fraction addition, pushed through and now solves algebraic equations using fractions—something he found intimidating at first.

In a recent session, two brothers in Year 8 went from distracted to enthusiastically competing against each other to answer percentage questions, showing new drive and focus compared to earlier lessons.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to hesitate on three-digit addition now completes these sums without error, finishing an entire set of problems correctly by himself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Watsonia Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Streeton Primary School.
