The most important thing that a tutor can present is the additional support and knowledge beyond what students learn in school. The tutor's presence serves to be a reference point for the students and their goal is to nurture and nourish the student academically. Students should be able to clear any confusions and express their queries without…

To help someone to open their mind to every possibility and teaching someone on how to think from a different perspective than the rest is one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student because when you open your mind to every possibility, there's nothing you cannot find a solution for. This will not only enable the student to get…

I think it is extremely important for a tutor to be adaptable. Different students have differing learning styles and needs, and therefore, to help different students, you need to be able to tailor your tutoring to individualised approaches. Furthermore, rather than just giving the children the answers, as a tutor it is important to be able to help…

Helping them feel to comfortable to make mistakes, and then to learn from said mistakes. I think that fear of failure is one of the big issues in learning, because if you are scared to try something even if you're unsure, you'll never be able to learn and succeed. I believe that tutors need to not only teach topics to students, but they must also be able to build the students confidence in their progress. Learning must be interesting and engaging as students must enjoy the process of learning for them to fully understand the topics as they will only peform well in engaging discussions. Adapting to the…

The tutor should ensure that students are grasping the concepts efficiently. The tutor should do regular monitoring regarding how much the students has learned and should not jump to next topic until or unless the previous one's are clear. I would consider an ongoing \'positive reinforcement and encouragement\' to student is crucial for their success. Students love to be motivated in learning and they love to feel loved and supported in their learning journey. We as tutors are not just there to teach them what to do, but as their motivators to guide and encourage, so that they can…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to make the student feel safe in the lesson. Especially when they’re facing subjects they struggle with which makes the lesson experience daunting. A good tutor has to challenge the student’s misconceptions that they’re bad at a certain subject to raise their confidence so they’re able to…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is just be patient with them. As students are brought up in a competitive environment in school, most times they feel inferior to their peers as not everyone learns at the same pace. Some learn faster and some learn slower and most often students feel lost and pressured. As a tutor, being there for…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is to first understand the student’s strengths and their learning style. Once you know this you can tailor the tutoring style towards these strengths so that they are getting the most out of their experience and they can understand the content in a way that clicks for them. Confidence is a key element that tutors can either instil or take away from a student. All children are born with a capacity to learn and it is our job to help them realise their great potential. In saying that, tutors must always be kind, encouraging and supportive of a child so that they can be confident enough to venture into the unknown and…

Inside YarrambatTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Mia worked on simplifying and adding surds, then applied multiplying surds to solve rectangle area problems.

Year 10 student Ben focused on linear equations, plotting points on the number plane, and finding rules for straight-line graphs using real examples.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah tackled exponential and logarithmic functions in Maths Methods, as well as practising derivatives and transformations in preparation for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Physics, one student hesitated to attempt complex application questions unless prompted—"there was a lot of pushback when it came to learning a topic he appeared to struggle with during his test." This avoidance slowed progress, especially with transformations and visual problems.

In Year 8 Mathematics, another student relied heavily on calculators for multiplication and division; this meant that mental fluency lagged behind class expectations.

A Year 3 English learner showed agitation when asked to write full sentences, making written tasks feel overwhelming.

In each case, process challenges—not content gaps—limited independent practice and confidence in new situations.

Recent Achievements

One Yarrambat tutor noted that a Year 10 student who had struggled with surds now confidently simplifies them and even tackles rationalising denominators on her own.

In senior secondary, Sachin initially felt uncertain about complex calculus rules, but after targeted sessions, he independently solved chain, product, and quotient rule questions—showing real initiative by working through his question booklet without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student, previously hesitant to check his answers when mistakes happened, is now actively correcting himself during lessons and willingly attempts tougher algebra problems above his year level. Last session, he completed every question the tutor set for him.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mernda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Yarrambat Primary School.
