A tutor has to give the student the confidence to take control of a subject. Life-long learning techniques should be shared and the goal is to help the student become self sufficient gradually. I’m very patient and I’d always prefer my students asking me for help on the same question multiple times instead of keeping it to themselves. I’m…

Supporting the student and encouraging development is really important for establishing rapport and fostering improvement. Effective communication with parents is also incredibly important. To make a student truly care about learning the topic at hand. Once a student understands the value in what they are learning, their inherent motivation does more to help them than any tutor ever could. Pairing that with some patience and guidance, and the student will thrive. I am extremely patient, and prepared to take as much time as the…

A tutor must always have patience for their students. They cannot rush them, and a student cannot be forced to understand specific content. I believe that tutors must friendly, approachable and sociable people who the student can feel comfortable around, for a relaxed learning environment. Students (and their parents) must feel that their tutor is…

It is not about the result it is how you get there. Although I do believe a tutor should boost the student's grades in school, I also strongly believe that a tutor must teach in a way that a student understands and enjoys. I would make sure my student understands the concept while enjoying what he is doing. I want to ignite the passion I have in…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be able to adapt their teaching style for them. Everybody learns differently, and rather than directly giving away answers to students a tutor should be able to present the problem in a way that the student would be able to understand and learn from the problem. My strength as a tutor is…

The most important thin, in my opinion, is recognising that every student learns differently. A good tutor needs to be flexible and have a deep, well-rounded understanding of the subject so they can explain concepts in different ways, depending on what suits the student best. I come from a family of teachers, so I’ve been surrounded by effective…

A tutor can be understanding and try to have enough knowledge to guide and answer all of the questions the student has. The tutor needs to create a welcoming environment so the students don't hesitate to ask questions, in fact they should be encouraged. A tutor has to be flexible enough to change their teaching style and methods according to the student's learning styles and capabilities. No two students are the same which means adaptability becomes a key skill that a tutor has to have and be able to provide a well tailored tutoring style for the student. Moreover, a tutor has to be kind and…

Thus, tutors can also help students develop positive and important qualities that would prepare them for the life beyond school. I would say that I am patient and organised, which are good qualities…

Local Reviews

Rosie is tutoring my child in year 7 maths and has built up a great rapport with her. Through my observations I can see that Rosie has a strong understanding of maths and is able to explain ideas and concepts very easily. She has a lot of patience and always checks my daughters understanding and offers alternative explanations where needed. Rosie is always punctual, friendly and polite and I am very happy with the progress that has been made to date.

Inside ZetlandTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student William worked on correcting homework covering simple interest and surds, along with catching up missed class content.

For Year 9, revision with Ben focused on dividing and multiplying fractions as well as tackling negative and fractional indices in surds.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Xavier practised converting remainders into decimals, solved word problems, and labelled different types of triangles using diagrams to support understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student left several steps unwritten when tackling algebraic equations, as one tutor noted: "he tried to do everything in his head instead of writing it down." This led to confusion over signs and made errors harder to spot.

In Year 11, incomplete homework meant that basic perfect square practice was missed, so extra time had to be spent revisiting foundational rules rather than progressing.

Meanwhile, a primary student working on division often forgot her materials at home, causing delays while searching for worksheets and slowing the start of each session.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Zetland noted that William, a Year 10 student, has started attempting every maths question instead of skipping the tough ones—a real shift from earlier sessions when he'd often give up if stuck.

In Year 11, after struggling with surd problems last term, he was able to recall the steps and solve similar questions independently this week, using his own notes for support.

Meanwhile, Elliott (Year 5) used to stay quiet during lessons but now openly talks through his reasoning on each English question and even asks for extra examples when something feels tricky. Last session, he wrote down all his ideas without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Green Square Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Green Square Public School.
