As a math and physics tutor, motivating students to do more practice questions is the best thing I can do for them. The more they understand concepts, the better they link them and apply them in difficult questions requiring analysis. My legacy for students is for them to feel inclined in doing more and more questions, it is from there a passion…

Become a role model and help inspire them to become the best version of themselves. I want to be someone who can help them expand their horizon for learning. And understand that maths and science isn't their enemy. Studying isn't their enemy. I feel what's most important is being an educator not a grader. Patience, and repetition, never…

Every student has different expectations from a tutor and thus the most important thing might vary from student to student. Some of them might just be looking for a pass in the subject whereas others might be looking for really good grades. For some grades wont even matter and they strive for understanding the subject thoroughly. I believe the…

I think self-taught is the most important thing that a tutor can teach a student. This is because self-taught can go with them anywhere but the tutor can not. Additionally, a tutor can not teach a student everything, so at some points, the student needs to explore themselves. I am patient and independent in studying. This is because I have been…

The most important thing is to communicate on a level that is with the students so they can understand the topics you are teaching, so they still feel connected and engaged in learning. It is one thing to help someone get the correct answer, but it is another thing to change student’s outlook. A positive and confident outlook will increase engagement, which means that the student is more likely to start having success even when the tutor is not present. Give them a safe space to ask questions and learn in a way they enjoy and are progressing in. There is no point in being over qualified and intelligent, but unapproachable and closed off. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to prepare them for later years in the subject they are working on and other subjects as well. With most tutors in the US, they only stay around if the student is having moderate to severe trouble (if the student is excelling, the parents don't usually want to pay for more sessions).…

I think the most important is to be supportive, from experience the reason that most people struggle with learning is because they give up or don’t think they can. I do think patience, good Communication Skills and the Ability to Make Students Visualise. Also the self-discipline. For one, the number of students working with tutors continues to grow. Two, working 1:1 with students is immensely gratifying, both for the tutor and tutee. And three, a few specific yet generalised characteristics become…

Super easy to get going and my daughter loves working with her tutor.
Tanya Connor, Abbotsford

Inside AbbotsfordTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Daniel focused on multiplying and dividing fractions as well as mastering times tables from 2 to 10 through targeted worksheets.

For Year 8, Emily worked through solving and simplifying algebraic equations, including factorisation, using step-by-step examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student James reviewed quadratic functions by practising graphing techniques and applying the quadratic formula to solve a range of problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths Methods, one student often skipped crucial steps when multiplying inequalities by negatives, leading to persistent sign errors—"she needs to practice translating English sentences into equations," a tutor noted.

For a Year 9 student, rushing through algebraic fractions without careful layout caused repeated mistakes and slowed progress.

In Year 10 English, a student struggled with structuring essays logically; missing deadlines and incomplete homework compounded this issue.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, reliance on memorisation without practicing tables (7–9) meant slow recall during timed drills, leaving her frustrated as others finished ahead.

Recent Achievements

One Abbotsford tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who used to leave assignments unfinished but now self-assigns tasks before assessments and works through them independently.

In English, a Year 12 student has become much more confident at forming positions and backing them up with clear reasoning—she recently articulated how Rear Window both depicts and subverts 1950s gender roles, something she'd hesitated to discuss before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who previously made frequent mistakes in times tables just completed all the tricky ones—including the 13s and 14s—with barely any errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Collingwood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sophia Mundi Steiner School.
