Having compassion. Being proficient in a subject does not guarantee that the student will understand as deeply as the tutor. Sometimes, techniques won't work, or the student may have problems outside of academics. Being compassionate will outweigh any other things that a chemistry tutor can do at the end of the day. I am able to compartmentalize…

I think that being patient and empathetic are two of the most important things a chemistry tutor can do for a student. Listening empathetically to a student can help a tutor to understand the way that the student thinks. In turn, the student feels understood and real improvements can be made. Patience is important for many reasons in tutoring.…

The most important skill would be the ability to teach the most complex concept by breaking it down to a simpler version for the student to learn and remember lifelong. My strengths are good communication skills, flexibility, patience, understanding the students' problems, and guide them accordingly. Other strengths would include being more…

I believe that it is paramount for a chemistry tutor to understand that every student learns differently and therefore may need a different approach to studying to achieve their goals. A tutor should ask their student how they learn best and implement this feedback into their approach to tutoring. Similarly, it is important to understand that each…

I think the most important thing is definitely the genuine desire to see a student improve. I think my strengths lie in being able to customise my experience to each student depending on their confidence, learning speed, and learning style. I'm also confident in my ability to present and explain topics with patience, and also my competency in the…

I believe it is important to understand the student's weaknesses and strengths before starting to teach them. I have come across a common problem with students, which is that they often jump straight into trying to solve a problem without fully understanding the theory/basics first. Hence, I try to first help them understand the basics then go…

In the short run, it is to ensure that they are grasping the concepts in the curriculum. In the long run, the most important thing is to shape their learning habits and change the way they approach concepts so that they are not disheartened by difficulty or sheer amount of learning that awaits them. I am patient while clearing doubts and…

I see my role as a chemistry tutor to guide my students, providing them with the strategies necessary to develop their knowledge and understanding. The first and foremost is being patient. Not everyone can learn and understand concepts at the same pace, so patience is very important. Trying different learning styles when the initial learning style doesn't work is another one, because people don't learn the same way. I'm very good at breaking down complex concepts into clear,…

Teachers are considered as one of the people who shape someone's future or career. By giving good pieces of advice by basing myself on my personal experience as a student, I'll make sure that the student is always on the right track. Try make tutoring fun, students no matter how hard you try will not retain information and be willing to learn if they are really against it. So by presenting the content in a fun but still effective manner, it is bound to show results. The most important thing when it comes to content is to not spoon feed them with the right answers, you need…

The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for a student is to be patient. Never give up on students. I try to make my tutoring methods fun. I…

There are 2 jobs of a chemistry tutor. To make the student understand what they are learning and also encourage them to do quality practice questions. In mi opinion, a chemistry tutor should take care of the students in terms of ensuring that they understand each one of the concepts and topics explained. One of the most important things a chemistry tutor can do for a student is to be proud of all the improvements the student has done. It's not about congratulating them for being a high achieving student. Instead, we should congratulate them for any improvement that they have done, since that is one step closer to success. I believe one of my…

From my perspective of view, the most important things I can teach a student are the interests in this subject and finding pleasure from it. If that does not work, I will teach students the train of thought when solving different types of questions, summarise the key points and raise efficiency in their learning. For me it is important for tutor to be able to encourage and make the student enjoy learning. Because in order for students to learn faster, they would need to be willing to digest the new knowledge and information given by the tutor. Furthermore, it is important for tutor to look at a problem from many different perspective, because one point of…

A tutor must be able to secure a positive impression of the subject in the student's mind, regardless of how arduous the subject content might be. A tutor is a third parent and must have immense patience to ensure that the child grasps each and every detail, even if they ask us to repeat what we taught. Besides, as tutors, we must always advocate…

Zacharo, Albert Park

Inside Albert ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Eliza focused on right-angled triangle trigonometry, using sine, cosine, and tangent to find unknown sides and angles, and practised interpreting worded problems involving true bearings.

Year 10 student Olivia worked through quadratic equations by completing the square and factorisation in preparation for a test, as well as reviewing the expansion of quadratics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Max tackled logarithms—covering concepts and worksheet practice—before moving on to applications of differentiation for polynomials.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing a statistics assignment sometimes left analysis sections unfinished or only in dot points, as noted: "Convert dot point ideas into sentences & paragraphs." This led to feedback being delayed and made self-review harder.

In Year 9, another student's exam revision was inconsistent—practice focused on familiar networks content rather than trickier trigonometry and matrix multiplication.

For a Year 8 maths task, one student relied heavily on calculator shortcuts during matrix questions ("more practice is needed on calculator"), which hid gaps in understanding when the method changed.

Missed opportunities for deeper learning appeared across multiple years when written work stayed incomplete or revision avoided less confident topics.

Recent Achievements

One Albert Park tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to mix up x and y coordinates now reliably applies the correct formulas for midpoint, distance, and gradient, even graphing without errors.

A Year 12 student who previously hesitated to ask questions about differentiation is now tackling polynomial problems independently and recently explained the tangent–secant relationship back to the tutor unprompted.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 7 has shifted from guessing angles in triangles to methodically identifying sides using SOHCAHTOA before solving for missing values—last session, she found all missing angles herself on the first try.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Albert Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Albert Park Primary School.
