The most important virtue that I consider for being a tutor for a student is having the patience to understand what they are expecting out of me, in order for me to give them back the necessary skills and training they require to excel in their domain. In addition to this, having a practical approach other than the traditional teaching style is…

In my opinion, learning and getting good grades are two things that complement each other. Once students have a firm grasp of the knowledge points in the learning phase, then they will have enough confidence to cope with the exam. As a tutor, you need to help students absorb knowledge more easily at the stage of learning knowledge. For example,…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to empower them with the skills and confidence to become independent learners. This involves not only imparting knowledge but also teaching critical thinking skills, problem-solving strategies, and effective study habits that will serve them beyond the tutoring sessions. I may excel at…

In my opinion, a tutor needs to really be a friend who is reliable and helpful for his/her students. A tutor should be able to help the students to deeply understand the content of the subject so they can perform better in class. I am a calm and friendly person and I believe that it will help a lot when I tutor other students. I also like to build…

A tutor must be able to secure a positive impression of the subject in the student's mind, regardless of how arduous the subject content might be. A tutor is a third parent and must have immense patience to ensure that the child grasps each and every detail, even if they ask us to repeat what we taught. Besides, as tutors, we must always advocate…

I believe the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is be reliable and consistent in helping them with problems that hey have either in class or with homework. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them discover self-motivation. By fostering a sense of intrinsic drive, students become more willing to delve into and excel in the subjects they love. I believe that it is important for a tutor to provide a safe space for the student. They should feel comfortable in the environment they are being taught in as well as in the presence of the tutor. Give their time in order to further assist the student and go the extra mile instead of doing just enough. This can heavily impact the student's learning experience as they know that there is someone willing to help them improve. I believe that there shouldn't be overworking the student but the student shouldn't be too relaxed when working. This…

Tutors should check for understanding as they go and constantly build confidence so that the student feels like their abilities are improving. When a student feels confident, wonderful things begin to happen. Their curiosity is ignited, and they are more likely to ask questions in class and read additional texts about things that interest them.…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make learning fun or easy. The best tutors and educators remember the importance of being lifelong learners. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build the student’s confidence and help them believe in their ability to improve. A good tutor doesn’t just provide answers — they teach students…

Zacharo, Albert Park

Inside Albert ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Eliza focused on right-angled triangle trigonometry, using sine, cosine, and tangent to find unknown sides and angles, and practised interpreting worded problems involving true bearings.

Year 10 student Olivia worked through quadratic equations by completing the square and factorisation in preparation for a test, as well as reviewing the expansion of quadratics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Max tackled logarithms—covering concepts and worksheet practice—before moving on to applications of differentiation for polynomials.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing a statistics assignment sometimes left analysis sections unfinished or only in dot points, as noted: "Convert dot point ideas into sentences & paragraphs." This led to feedback being delayed and made self-review harder.

In Year 9, another student's exam revision was inconsistent—practice focused on familiar networks content rather than trickier trigonometry and matrix multiplication.

For a Year 8 maths task, one student relied heavily on calculator shortcuts during matrix questions ("more practice is needed on calculator"), which hid gaps in understanding when the method changed.

Missed opportunities for deeper learning appeared across multiple years when written work stayed incomplete or revision avoided less confident topics.

Recent Achievements

One Albert Park tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to mix up x and y coordinates now reliably applies the correct formulas for midpoint, distance, and gradient, even graphing without errors.

A Year 12 student who previously hesitated to ask questions about differentiation is now tackling polynomial problems independently and recently explained the tangent–secant relationship back to the tutor unprompted.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 7 has shifted from guessing angles in triangles to methodically identifying sides using SOHCAHTOA before solving for missing values—last session, she found all missing angles herself on the first try.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Albert Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Albert Park Primary School.
