Having a personal passion and drive to learn will lead a student to becoming a holistic and proactive learner, guiding their personal growth and conceptualisation of information. When a student fully engages with their education in a healthy and positive manner, the benefits extend beyond the classroom as this attitude can be applied to other…

For me, the most important thing is to always ask questions if there are any unclear parts of the lesson. Also, mastery is always important so practice is the key, esp. for Math. My strength as a tutor would be that I try to put myself on the student's shoes to determine the parts or method he or she might find…

Confidence! Making children feel safe and confident is the most important thing a tutor can do for students. When a child feels safe with you and able to be their true self, they will engage more with learning and exceed all expectations. I am patient and kind and really care about the progress of all children. I also like working with the…

Aside from teaching students the concepts required for their study, it's essential for tutors or any teacher for that matter to teach students how to learn. This involves critical thinking, asking the right questions, learning from their mistakes and developing good study habits. Once these are imparted in the students, they are given the tools…

It would be empathy, in my opinion. I am aware that there are intelligent people who are easily able to surpass me in knowledge, but I believe that to effectively teach and learn, one must have a sufficient level of empathy. One need not always be a great teacher to be a great intellect. My capacity for empathy is unmatched. I can put myself in…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to accomodate to their individual needs, ensuring they know that they’re smart and capable of accomplishing their goals, despite their struggles. My experience as a teaching assistant has taught me to be open minded and adaptable, recognising that there is no such thing as a…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to create an environment in which the pupil feels encouraged to ask questions. Without a certain degree of security or familiarity, most kids are too nervous or shy to ask questions and thus are left with a minimalistic understanding of a topic, instead of the deeper understanding they could gain by…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do is listen. There may be other things going on either at home or at school that is preventing students from reaching their academic goals and the best way to foster a student-tutor relationship is to that you're there for them and that you understand what they're going through, in order to…

A tutor has a duty to help a student the best they can, regardless of the circumstances. If the tutor displays any sort of discriminating bias towards one student's ability to learn, then why continue to tutor? I think my core strength would be my patient yet meticulous tutoring style. I try my best to guide students by going through content…

With this approach, a student can see one topic in more different way and learn more and more. A tutor is the main source of wisdom. Make the topic enjoyable. The amount of times my mind has wandered off in lectures cause of how the lecturers just spew information and not engage with the students. This showed me that tutors need to explain things in a way that is engaging. Different students need different methods, some like visualising the question so I draw the question out…

It definitely has to be creating passion within a student for a subject that they are struggling with. As a newly graduated student, I understand how crushing and demotivating a difficult subject can be. In addition, receiving tutoring in a subject you have no passion for, is terrible for their learning and mental health. Thus I think that the…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence and foster independent thinking. A good tutor doesn’t just give answers. They help students understand how to think through problems and develop strategies they can use on their own. That means being patient, asking the right questions, and adjusting…

A tutor should try to think like a student tutor should try to get into the child’s mind, mostly a tutor should try to bend according to the child’s need because if a tutor is just like a machine then they won’t be able to critically analyse where the child is unable to grasp the knowledge so it’s very very important that a tutor should…

Zacharo, Albert Park

Inside Albert ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Eliza focused on right-angled triangle trigonometry, using sine, cosine, and tangent to find unknown sides and angles, and practised interpreting worded problems involving true bearings.

Year 10 student Olivia worked through quadratic equations by completing the square and factorisation in preparation for a test, as well as reviewing the expansion of quadratics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Max tackled logarithms—covering concepts and worksheet practice—before moving on to applications of differentiation for polynomials.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing a statistics assignment sometimes left analysis sections unfinished or only in dot points, as noted: "Convert dot point ideas into sentences & paragraphs." This led to feedback being delayed and made self-review harder.

In Year 9, another student's exam revision was inconsistent—practice focused on familiar networks content rather than trickier trigonometry and matrix multiplication.

For a Year 8 maths task, one student relied heavily on calculator shortcuts during matrix questions ("more practice is needed on calculator"), which hid gaps in understanding when the method changed.

Missed opportunities for deeper learning appeared across multiple years when written work stayed incomplete or revision avoided less confident topics.

Recent Achievements

One Albert Park tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to mix up x and y coordinates now reliably applies the correct formulas for midpoint, distance, and gradient, even graphing without errors.

A Year 12 student who previously hesitated to ask questions about differentiation is now tackling polynomial problems independently and recently explained the tangent–secant relationship back to the tutor unprompted.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 7 has shifted from guessing angles in triangles to methodically identifying sides using SOHCAHTOA before solving for missing values—last session, she found all missing angles herself on the first try.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Albert Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Albert Park Primary School.
