I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is give the student confidence that they can complete problems on their own and be successful in their studies. I remember how disheartening it was when I couldn't understand or effectively answer problems in school. Especially at a younger age, academic success is a value that…

A very personal thing I like to teach my students is to pay attention to the small details. Each and every word, each and every equation. It is the ability to start at a granular level that makes the grand ideas and concepts easier to understand. My strength is really my ability to understand the student well. I believe different methods of…

I always say that the most important thing is being patient. I know that every child is different, so tutors have to adapt to each child and teach children in the appropriate way, since each student understands subjects differently. I am a young person, so I am able to understand a child in many situations. I am aware of mental health and the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help the student understand rather than showing the student, as when you understand the process you're less likely to forget than when you just know the process. Personally, I believe that a good tutor is more than just a teacher; they guide students based on their specific needs. They consider various factors, such as a student's learning style, and tailor their instruction to them. They also instil executive study skills in students, which will benefit them both academically and in life. Being a great…

A tutor should be patient and should be able to accomodate oneself with the students. The main aim of the tutor should be to suit to the needs of the child. Students can of course vary greatly in their strengths, difficulties and needs. This is true both intrinsically and as a function of development and external context. The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is therefore to diagnose those individual needs, and "meet the student where they are." The essential problem of tutoring…

In my opinion, one of the most important things a tutor can do is to make it clear to a student that they are capable and believe in their abilities as a student. This establishes trust and goes a long way in terms of fixing problems of difficulties in any subject area. It will also build a student's confidence in themself all while knowing there…

Inside AlbionTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Amber practised converting between kilograms, grams, and other units, along with long division and understanding place value.

In Year 10, Liam focused on surface area problems from Chapter 6D and E and also reviewed key trigonometry applications for non-right-angled triangles using exam prep questions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Daniel worked through anti-differentiation and differentiation concepts for his assignment, as well as tackled graphing sinusoidal functions like cosine and sine from Chapter 5.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student working on piece-wise functions needed extra practice breaking down complex, multi-step problems; as a tutor noted, "figuring out areas of tricky shapes required careful reading to avoid missing key details."

In Year 9, there was confusion converting units and identifying which formula applied in surface area tasks, sometimes leading to skipped sides or misapplied calculations.

For a Year 4 student, not knowing times tables made it difficult to attempt multiplication questions—"she couldn't do much multiplication practice since she doesn't know the times tables of any numbers yet," wrote one tutor. This slowed progress through longer division and multi-step problems.

Recent Achievements

One Albion tutor noted a high school student who, after weeks of confusion with trigonometric functions, independently calculated B and C values for sine and cosine graphs—a real shift from needing step-by-step prompts.

Another secondary student, previously hesitant to tackle complex worded problems, started breaking down multi-step surface area questions on her own and explained her reasoning aloud without waiting for reassurance.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who would often guess at answers now double-checks his working when converting decimals to fractions and consistently arranges numbers in order before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hamilton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Margaret's Anglican Girls School.
