A good tutor should make learning easier, not more stressful. The most important things they can do are: 1. Break things down simply – No overcomplicated explanations, just clear, straightforward teaching. 2. Adapt to the student – Everyone learns differently, so figuring out what works best for each person is key. 3. Boost…

The most important thing is to build the student's confidence. A tutor should make it okay to ask questions and make mistakes. For me, I think the comfortable study atmosphere is vital for the student. The student will not be able to study efficiently in anxiety. Sometimes a student might know the knowledge, but they are too stressful or not confident to write it out. Providing a comfortable study atmosphere for them will be helpful. Also, it is significant to answer the…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, foster independent thinking, and create a safe space where they feel comfortable asking questions. When I tutor students, I tend not to follow the same pattern or process of learning for every kid. empower them for their life goal, and know why study is important. Students have to be proactive, tutor will not be always with you in your life, at some point of life, you need to be your own tutor. Initially, he/she must understand the background (educational / intellectual) of the student(s). Moreover, need to understand on where the student is struggling and what he/she wants to achieve. It will give a tutor a great perspective on when and how to start. Then, develop a lesson plan accordingly. Be the guide but not a helper of a student. It…

Inside Alfords PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alex revised multiplication and division strategies, then practiced identifying and measuring angles.

For Year 8, Mia worked on converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages using visual examples, while also revisiting earlier topics for a topic test.

In Year 10, Josh tackled advanced algebraic equations alongside trigonometry problems to prepare for his upcoming exam.

Recent Challenges

Across Years 7–12, lesson notes repeatedly showed that revision habits need strengthening—particularly independent review between sessions.

For example, in Year 8 algebra, one student was reminded to "practice by himself to remember for tests," but had not attempted problems outside lessons, so key fraction simplifications were quickly forgotten.

In Year 10 trigonometry, another focused only on familiar SOH CAH TOA questions; "needs to go practice over things himself… and memorising SOH CAH TOA," a tutor noted, as exam-style variations remained unattempted. This led to hesitation when tackling anything beyond the standard drills during mock exams.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Alfords Point noticed a big change with Max, a Year 10 student who had struggled with trigonometry and algebra—by the end of their session, he solved every question but also tackled extra problems on his own without prompting.

In another high school session, one student went from missing key exam questions to explaining exactly where mistakes happened and how to fix them, showing new self-awareness about learning.

For a younger primary student, a real shift came when she began answering questions out loud after usually waiting for hints; by the last exercise, she volunteered her answers first.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

The tutoring has started really well Sam is very happy with Din and has gotten off to a positive start.

Cameron is turning out to be a great tutor and Mitchell really enjoys the sessions.

Domenic has only had one session with Alvin, but he thinks he is 'awesome'. He likes the tips and tricks Alvin explains for solving maths problems. He's not keen on tutorials over holidays so will continue with more weekly lessons starting next week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Menai Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Alfords Point Public School.
