A tutor has to be understanding and respectful to the student that they are teaching, they need to realise that these individuals don't have the same level of knowledge as them at the time, so they need time to learn and understand difficult concepts and that require more explanation. The key is to build a strong healthy and friendly relationship…

I've always said that a good teacher will help a student understand the work. A very good tutor will help a student find it within themselves to do the work. But i view myself as a great tutor, one that can do all of that, while actually inspiring the students. Im very patient, very organized, well spoken and persistent. Im a very hard worker, and…

One of the most important things for a maths tutor to be able to provide a student, is a sense of progression through exam marks. Moreover, being able to communicate to students well and without ambiguity or miscommunication in the explanation of mathematical concepts is one of the most important qualities a tutor must have, as that is what…

The most important things a maths tutor can do is help the student gain a proper understanding of concepts to aid all their personal study and school work. They should work to build a passion for the subject in the student so they begin to enjoy the study rather than see tutoring and studying as a hassle, which will help their exam performance…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is teach them how to approach learning in a way that is self sufficient. Understanding content is important for the time, but ultimately, a tutor should leave the student with the skills to know how to understand content when the tutor is no longer there. I am patient, persistent and…

I think the most important things a maths tutor can do for a student is providing them with support in different aspects not just academically. I think it’s extremely important for the student to like and have confidence in what they are doing and stay curious for what they are about to learn. That’s why I think a tutor’s support can provide…

In my personal opinion, I believe a game-changer for students is to have a maths tutor who helps build their confidence. Rather than only imparting knowledge, a tutor should foster a learning atmosphere that makes students comfortable to ask questions, make mistakes and even question the knowledge of the tutor. My strengths as a tutor include the…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to ask them for constant feedback/questions. Some students are hesitant to ask questions when they are confused, which can easily lead to them not understanding content. Hence, it is important as a tutor to actively make sure that your student actually understands what you are…

I had a maths tutor in high school for my VCE studies. I learned that a tutor must be a supportive figure that guides their student with compassion and patience. The demeanor of my tutor relived the stress of studying and gave me the confidence to attempt difficult problems that I would have given up on. Students at any year level will often feel…

The best thing that a maths tutor can do for a student is not to regurgitate information - that can be found by reading a book, or browsing the internet; but to inspire. Inside Alfords PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alex revised multiplication and division strategies, then practiced identifying and measuring angles.

For Year 8, Mia worked on converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages using visual examples, while also revisiting earlier topics for a topic test.

In Year 10, Josh tackled advanced algebraic equations alongside trigonometry problems to prepare for his upcoming exam.

Recent Challenges

Across Years 7–12, lesson notes repeatedly showed that revision habits need strengthening—particularly independent review between sessions.

For example, in Year 8 algebra, one student was reminded to "practice by himself to remember for tests," but had not attempted problems outside lessons, so key fraction simplifications were quickly forgotten.

In Year 10 trigonometry, another focused only on familiar SOH CAH TOA questions; "needs to go practice over things himself… and memorising SOH CAH TOA," a tutor noted, as exam-style variations remained unattempted. This led to hesitation when tackling anything beyond the standard drills during mock exams.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Alfords Point noticed a big change with Max, a Year 10 student who had struggled with trigonometry and algebra—by the end of their session, he solved every question but also tackled extra problems on his own without prompting.

In another high school session, one student went from missing key exam questions to explaining exactly where mistakes happened and how to fix them, showing new self-awareness about learning.

For a younger primary student, a real shift came when she began answering questions out loud after usually waiting for hints; by the last exercise, she volunteered her answers first.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Flynn is going well with his tutor. We have had 2 sessions and they have been productive. Thanks for your service.

Finn is responding well to Anthony's tutoring, thank you. Anthony is kind, knowledgeable and has a lovely manner. Finn is feeling more confident and we will be continuing with Anthony's weekly tutorials.

We are so happy and impressed with Pariese. She has already made a great rapport with Charlie, which was our initial concern. She is both both professional and engaging with an obvious passion for maths. She has given us feedback relating to Charlie's learning style and is active in finding strategies to suit him. The fact that he looks forward to his lesson, is a testament in itself. She is always punctual and happy to have a brief at the end of each session. I have spoken to Pariese about Charlie needing long term tutoring, to which she agreed.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Menai Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Alfords Point Public School.
