A tutor should provide what a teacher can't. There is a reason that students seek tutoring, and it is therefore a chemistry tutor's role to meet their needs. I believe patience is the most important thing. Not everyone thinks the same, and its important for a tutor to understand this, and to move at a pace that suits the student, whilst also…

I believe understanding the calibre of the student and providing constant motivation is something a chemistry tutor must importantly do for a student because quite often the individuality of a student gets lost in class and so the tutor needs to grab onto that individuality of the student so that they can not just progress ahead academically but…

The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do is to equip the student with the skills to find answers and explore the subject on their own. Whenever my students ask me questions outside of the syllabus, I involve them in the process of looking up papers and interpreting scientific language. I am able to come up with analogies to help students…

I know what its like to feel lost and anxious about academics. I have been demoted to the bottom class, twice in my school years and it would be selfish of me not to share how I overcame my own insecurities with others on a similar path. Patience, I don't like to rush things, everything needs its time grow and bear fruit. Communication, I speak…

In my opinion, patience is the most important. Tutor is different from a teacher because as a chemistry tutor, it allows us more time to explain, and allows students more time to ask. Only if I show patience, my students are not afraid to keep asking. I think this is the whole point of tutoring. I grow up in an asian city so I had a lot of…

I can make the student not only competent, but also comfortable and confident in a certain topic. I understand how stressful hard subjects can be. I want to take away the feeling of fear when students enter a class they think they're not good in. Another thing is teaching a student to be an autodidact. I was fortunate enough to know this tactic…

The tutor's ability to adapt to a student's learning style is crucial. Not every student can be taught in the same manner. Regularly evaluating a student's learning patterns, whether through visual, verbal or written methods is very important in identifying the most effect strategy to cater for the student's needs. During class time, students…

I would say the most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for a student is helping them grow as individuals, and help them find a love for learning - a strong passion for the academic studies. A tutor needs to also serve as a good role model for the students, and be a person the student can trust to help them improve their grades. I would say…

I consider a chemistry tutor responsibility towards students is to be committed and flexible. The tutor should be with their student even if both have been going through the exam period. The tutor should never cancel on a lesson with a student for their own studies. As well, it is a must to be patient towards the student and be flexible as a tutor…

To be able to build a personal relationship with the student where the student is comfortable to ask questions as to what they don't understand, and be able to answer them clearly and patiently. Above all else, I believe a chemistry tutor should prioritise student wellbeing. Beyond academic achievement, it's essential to foster a sense of belonging, confidence and self-worth in each student. This involves attentive listening, emotional support, and creating a safe, judgement-free space. Additionally, empowering students to take ownership…

Lindsey, Alfred Cove

Inside Alfred CoveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Olivia reviewed perimeter, area, and surface area from her recent measurement test, then practised Venn diagrams and two-way tables to prepare for a probability assessment.

Year 9 student Paige focused on multiplying and dividing decimals and worked through estimation strategies using real numbers, identifying areas for improvement with targeted examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Michael tackled ratios, rates, and percentages—solving financial mathematics problems involving simple interest and applying ratio reasoning in context.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 mathematics, he relied heavily on a calculator for fraction questions, leading to missed practice with manual calculations and more errors when calculators weren't allowed.

A Year 11 student in algebra avoided writing out working steps—as noted, blank lines hid sign mistakes in equations—making it difficult to spot patterns or correct errors later.

In English (Year 5), incomplete homework meant less progress building vocabulary and academic writing skills.

One Year 9 student's lesson notes showed notetaking was patchy, resulting in confusion during topic reviews.

Each of these habits slowed confidence and left gaps before assessments.

Recent Achievements

One Alfred Cove tutor noticed a Year 10 student who previously hesitated with significant figures now tackling worded scientific notation problems independently, even rounding correctly to two and three significant figures.

In a recent high school maths session, another student who once struggled with choosing the right formula for simple interest was able to identify which calculation method fit each question type and explain her reasoning aloud.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner—who used to stay quiet during lessons—has begun verbalising his thinking while working through multi-digit subtraction, allowing the tutor to address misunderstandings on the spot.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We are very happy with Sean, the kids have responded very well to him and even look forward to the sessions!

Abed is passionate about maths, and is very keen to teach his student, and ensure they are succeeding. He is an asset to Ezymaths.

Things are going really well. Kai enjoys Noah's tutoring. On his last math's assessment he received 80% in comparison to the one before which was 55%. I met with his math's school teacher and she has provided upcoming topics for Noah to discuss with Kai as well as 2 practice tests. Her feedback was positive too and constructive. If we stay on this path, I'm confident that it will prepare him well for the upcoming HSC.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as AH Bracks Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Melville Primary School.
