The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is providing support. Whether it is support in increasing the student's knowledge or psychological support to help the student find their own interest and passion toward studying, the support provided by the tutor is essential. I am patient and constantly seek new ways to explain concepts to…

As a tutor, the most important thing for a student is comfort and understanding. I suppose that a tutor should go beyond his limits to help the students as much as its possible. In order to establish a good relationship, the tutor must be an energetic person, someone with a lot of enthusiasm with respect to human interactions. This interest will…

An important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make sure they are focusing on areas of study that the student struggles with that they might miss out on in school to ensure they are doing the best that they can. My strengths as a tutor are that I am very interactive and enjoy allowing students to participate as I find this makes learning…

Communicating in a way in which the student can understand, and not being a “textbookâ€. Communication. As a tutor, I believe patience is the most important thing a tutor can do for a student as not all people learn at the same speed. In addition, it is also important to tackle the student's weaknesses in particular as they become more well rounded and provide them with more confidence that they can overcome challenges and makes them more open…

I believe persistence and encouragement are important in supporting a student, especially if they don't receive this at their own school. A main reason students don't do well or aren't productive is because they aren't motivated. It is important to try and help them be self-motivated by their own passions and desires in life. I would not give up…

Simply to understand the student as an individual. Everyone has different learning styles, what works for some won't work for others. Something I can do as a tutor that perhaps a school teacher might not, is to provide guidance and support in a way the student best understands, prefers and at a pace in which they are not overwhelmed by. When a…

I think tutors should examine their students to find what their student truly lack in understanding on certain field. Not all students have same level of talent, willingness to study, dedication to achievements. They can even have learning disabilities which limit or slow down their education. Then they should adopt appropriate methods of teaching…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to act as a mentor, and a motivator. A tutor should, assess a students' level, especially if they're falling behind, and identify how they learn best, so the support is truly effective. With the student's needs understood, a tutor should provide the guidance and tools to…

Gaining confidence in the student. Most times any student seeks out a tutor in the first place is fuelled by a lack of confidence. The most important thing we can probably do is to change their own perspective on their own capabilities within the subject. To do so, it would be to teach them effective learning and thinking strategies. I have…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are create a supportive learning environment, explain concepts in a way the student understands, and build their confidence. A good tutor helps students develop problem-solving skills, so they don't memorise the type of question, but HOW to do that question, which encourages them to think…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be free to communicate. Haven't looked back, ezy maths has really propelled my child as far as her grades at school. Our maths Tutor has been fantastic. My child felt comfortable with him from the beginning and has been broadening and strengthening her knowledge ever since. With regular feedback from Tutor you feel you are always in the loop in relation to child's development.
Mary, Altona

Inside AltonaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Madison focused on similar triangles and practiced trigonometry and Pythagoras' Theorem with exam-style questions, while also exploring compound interest as part of a class validation task.

In Year 10, Liam worked on consolidating his skills in applying Pythagoras to worded problems and using trigonometric ratios to find unknown side lengths in triangles.

Meanwhile, another Year 10 student, Ella, covered bearings in trigonometry and revisited measurement concepts including volume and surface area calculations.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student, when solving worded trigonometry problems, tended to avoid writing out steps and key words, making it harder to spot where misunderstandings occurred. This meant errors often went unnoticed until review time.

In Year 8 algebra, over-reliance on the calculator for identifying gradients in linear functions led to confusion about core concepts; as one tutor put it, "he could find the answer but struggled to explain how he got there."

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student often forgot to bring completed homework, leaving gaps in practice that slowed progress with times tables and division tasks.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Altona noticed that a Year 9 student, after initially hesitating to ask for help, began actively seeking clarification on trigonometric ratios and then independently solved for unknown side lengths using SIN, COS, and TAN.

Another high school student who used to skip steps with linear graphs is now confidently plotting points and explaining the meaning of rise over run without prompting—she even developed her own summary sheet for an upcoming SAC.

In primary, one student who would guess times tables has started working them out aloud step by step, moving from 10×3 backwards and discovering new patterns on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Altona Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Mary's School.
