All students need a little help, a little hope, and somebody who believes in them. That somebody is definitely their tutor. Tutors do not just give out answers, they want students to understand how to do the work on their own. Tutoring is a huge liability as your students look upon you as a mentee and a good tutor never lets them down.…

Adaptability – every student is different. For many reasons some students perform better than others. Ability to involve with students and understanding where they are lacking would allow me as a tutor to teach the building blocks of learning. This is in line with the hope that most students keep on a tutor or a teacher that can enhance their…

A tutor can help students guide their future pathway for greater success in their life. A tutor can also build a strong mindset within a student. pathetic: Understands what it’s like to be a student who may lack confidence, feel stressed, be overwhelmed or just not understand the material. Honest: Don’t hesitate to say that you do not know about a particular concept. Trying to bluff your way through will only hurt the student and your reputation in the long run. Enthusiastic:…

To be consoling and confident, so that the student believes in you. To have a very good relationship with the student is an important key because it releases the stress on the student-tutor barrier, which is important especially during learning. Additionally, to motivate the student in achieving intellectual barriers. I am a people person as i am…

A teacher needs to be friendly, interactive at the same time authoritarian in a positive way. A teacher cannot do much if a student do not co-operates. The most important thing of a tutor is the ability to impart knowledge in a suitable, correct and effective way to the students. Good knowledge is important, but without the ability to impart knowledge, teaching will never be successful. I have 4 main strengths. Firstly, I love children and love teaching. Secondly, I have high patience and am…

A tutor should try to think like a student tutor should try to get into the child’s mind, mostly a tutor should try to bend according to the child’s need because if a tutor is just like a machine then they won’t be able to critically analyse where the child is unable to grasp the knowledge so it’s very very important that a tutor should…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help build/maintain self confidence as well as to incite a love of learning by awakening curiosity. Throughout the course of life, it is rather difficult to maintain self confidence due to the never ending competition we face. Having been on this journey myself, I believe that…

The most important things a tutor can do are to build a student’s confidence, create a comfortable space for questions, and adapt to their learning style. I also focus on breaking down concepts slowly and thoroughly, especially in challenging areas—a method I learned from my dad. Though it frustrated me as a kid, I now see how this approach…

A tutor or teacher has to show passion/enthusiasm/excitement for the subject(s) they teach to their students, students learn best in subjects they are interested/excited about, you cannot expect a student to be interested & do well in a subject if even the person teaching them the subject isn't interested in the subject. Enthusiasm and passion…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are create a supportive learning environment, explain concepts in a way the student understands, and build their confidence. A good tutor helps students develop problem-solving skills, so they don't memorise the type of question, but HOW to do that question, which encourages them to think…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen and understand. Students who are strugglings with certain subjects might not actually be bad at the subjects but rather they might not have had proper guidance from their teachers or they do not have a strong foundation, or they are just not studying in the right method. Anthony, Altona North

Inside Altona NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student John worked through solving linear equations and inequalities, using textbook examples to reinforce balancing techniques.

In Year 10, Olivia focused on conditional probability, including practice with tree diagrams and interpreting union and intersection scenarios.

For Year 11, James reviewed the properties of tangent graphs versus sine and cosine functions, then practised sketching and finding x-intercepts for trigonometric graphs ahead of his upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

Several high school students did not complete or submit assigned homework, especially on algebra calculations and exam revision tasks. In one Year 11 session, "she was asked to send finished questions by email," but no work arrived, leaving gaps before upcoming assessments.

For a Year 10 student revising trigonometry, textbook exercises set for mastering unit circle values were left unfinished, so confusion lingered into the next lesson.

A Year 8 student focusing on factorization received extra problems but struggled to keep pace with required practice—missing out on timely feedback before moving forward.

Recent Achievements

One Altona North tutor noted that Millie, a Year 5 student who used to wait for prompts, is now actively jumping in to answer questions and even works through her own mistakes without hesitation.

In a recent high school maths session, a Year 11 student who had struggled with graphing trigonometric functions started approaching practice test questions with visible confidence, independently solving both sine and tangent graphs after weeks of uncertainty.

Another tutor described how Neha, previously hesitant about essay writing, managed to analyse arguments and write a complete language analysis essay on her own for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Yarraville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bayside P-12 College-Altona North Campus.
